Tyler Perry’s latest gender-bender, Madea’s Big Happy Family debuted in second place with a $25.7 mil take over the weekend.
And Water for Elephants, despite its big-named stars, Reese Witherspoon, Robert Pattinson and Christoph Waltz, struggled with $17.5 million in estimated revenue. It’s not surprising considering the movie received mostly lukewarm reviews. However, the good news is that the film only cost $38 mil to produce so it could easily recoup its budget over the next few weeks.
Hop, actually gained ground by 16.3 percent, though it still dropped from third to fourth place between Friday and Sunday. The live action-animated mash-up still brought in an additional estimated $12.4 mil this weekend.
Scream 4 dropped 61.7 percent and slide from second to fifth place raising $7.1 million more. That brings its total to $31.1 mil to date.
African Cats, Disney’s nature doc landed in sixth place for its debut and brought in $6.4 million. Not a bad take for a documentary film that was only in 1220 theaters.
