It’s been a fulfilling road from American Idol season seven to now for Brooke White. And today the singer/songwriter has stepped out of her comfort zone to accept the starring role in the family film Change of Plans (8:00 p.m. ET/PT, FOX).

White portrays schoolteacher Sally Danville, whose best friend has died in a tragic accident while serving in the Peace Corp. Danville discovers she’s been made guardian to the woman’s four children, three of which have come from third world countries.

Danville and her husband Jason (Joe Flanigan) have to learn to parent their new family, while helping the kids navigate through the cultural differences in America.

White knows her acting is a direction that may surprise some, but for her, it was a normal progression.

“It felt very natural to do this,” she relates. “I got to tell you when I first got the news I got the part I had my first meeting with the directed and I nearly hyperventilated. I just didn’t know what to expect. But the, it was fun. It was long, it was a lot of work, but the long days didn’t see long because I enjoyed it so much.”

That very first scene was unnerving for sure. Because kids can only be on set a limited amount of time, White had to act opposite a tree once the young actress was done shooting for the day. However, once the American Idol finalist complete her portion, she could breathe again, thanks to the director John Kent Harrison, she tells Hollywood Outbreak.com.

It was kind of scary,” White recalls. “When I finished my first scene the director said to the crew standing around, ‘Hey everybody, that was Brooke’s first scene and everybody clapped.”

Still, don’t expect White to jump into acting full time…after all, music is her first love.

“Music is such a big part of who I am,” she points out. “I’m working on an album right now. I’ve written about 20 songs going back and forth between L.A. and Nashville. I’m not giving up music by any means. I’m just adding acting to the resume, I suppose.”

Fans, rest assured, White does plenty of singing in Change of Plans.
