There are two schools of thought for actors accepting roles based on literature…those who read the book first and those who don’t. Amanda Seyfried, who stars in the adapted movie, Dear John knew that reading the novel cover to cover before she finished shooting the flick was a no-no.

The actress was already hard at work on the film when she received the book and though she was tempted, Seyfried held back because she was worried her performance might change afterward.

Still, Seyfried couldn’t help but be excited while meeting Dear John author, Nicolas Sparks – and learned a little something about diplomacy in the process. Namely, if you’re meeting the author it’s a good idea to bone up on his work.
