Keanu Reeves Manages To Coax Reclusive Filmmaking Pals To ‘Side By Side’

wachowskis-1Currently in limited theatrical release as well as being available via VOD, SIDE BY SIDE is a first-rate documentary (hosted and co-produced by KEANU REEVES) on the subject of digital technology as it pertains to contemporary filmmaking. Sure to get some attention come awards season, the film features interviews with a collection of filmmakers that includes such heavyweights as LANA and ANDY WACHOWSKI, BARRY LEVINSON, LENA DUNHAM, DANNY BOYLE and GEORGE LUCAS (to name just a few).
Notoriously camera-shy and reluctant to do interviews, LANA and ANDY WACHOWSKI were a major casting coup for REEVES (even though they’d worked together on the  MATRIX films). During our recent interview, he talked about getting them to agree to help out on the project.

VOD Allows Film Buffs A Better Shot At Seeing Landmark Documentary ‘Side By Side’

side_by_side1Available today via VOD and now able to reach a greater audience than in its limited theatrical run, SIDE BY SIDE is an entertaining, enlightening and, to many film buffs, important documentary co-produced and hosted by KEANU REEVES. Directed by CHRISTOPHER KENNEALLY, the film takes on the subject of digital technology as it pertains to contemporary filmmaking and includes interviews with a cadre of filmmakers that include JAMES CAMERON, MARTIN SCORSESE, DAVID FINCHER, DAVID LYNCH and STEVEN SODERBERGH (to name just a few). Essentially sounding the death knell for traditional photochemical film as the continuing medium of choice, SIDE BY SIDE is an essential bookmark in the pages of cinematic history.  During a recent roundtable session to promote the film, REEVES talked about discussing the philosophy of switching to digital filmmaking with the artists who are making it happen.

‘Side By Side’ Spotlights Inevitability of Digital Revolution

Side By Side, an incisive documentary that is a must see for cinephiles, details how digital filmmaking has supplanted “film” making.  Most directors are huge proponents of the digital revolution, while other purists (like The Dark Knight Returns head Christopher Nolan) prefer the texture and visual grain achieved from shooting on film.

Shooting on digital, whether it’s with the top of the line Arri Alexa or RED cameras, is a logical step in the evolution of cinema.  Keanu Reeves, who produced Side By Side, is also the documentary’s narrator and interviewer, as he talks with a plethora of directors (George Lucas, James Cameron, David Lynch, and David Fincher), along with cinematographers and editors, about the digital revolution (and in turn, the death of film).

I asked Mr. Reeves during a Side By Side interview if digital cameras are able to capture the warmth and texture of film.  Here’s his response:

‘Side By Side’ Signals The End Of Traditional Film As We Know It

side_by_sideMaking a pit-stop in Los Angeles to promote his new film SIDE BY SIDE, KEANU REEVES took a break from the on-going production of his big-screen directorial debut MAN OF TAI CHI, to spend a little time with select entertainment reporters. A top-notch documentary he co-produced and hosts on the subject of digital technology as it pertains to contemporary filmmaking, SIDE BY SIDE is sure to get some attention come awards season. Interviewing a collection of filmmakers that includes such heavyweights as LANA and ANDY WACHOWSKI, BARRY LEVINSON, LENA DUNHAM, DANNY BOYLE and GEORGE LUCAS (to name just a few), REEVES is conducting as much a wake for traditional film as a celebration of digital technology. During our interview, REEVES reflected on the eventual loss of photochemical film as a tool.

SIDE BY SIDE opens in Los Angeles Friday, becomes available via VOD 8/22 and opens in New York 8/31

‘Side By Side’ Host Keanu Reeves Not Quite Ready For The Digital Revolution To Win

keanu-reeves-on-sharing-martin-scorseses-nostalgia-for-film-0-01-13-23Taking time from the production of his big-screen directorial debut MAN OF TAI CHI, KEANU REEVES sat down with entertainment reporters earlier this week to discuss SIDE BY SIDE, the documentary he co-produced and hosts on the subject of digital technology as it pertains to contemporary filmmaking. Interviewing a cadre of filmmakers that include JAMES CAMERON, MARTIN SCORSESE, DAVID FINCHER, DAVID LYNCH and STEVEN SODERBERGH (to name just a few), REEVES essentially sounds the death knell for traditional photochemical film as the continuing medium of choice.
Responding to a reporters questions about who seemed the most affected by the idea of film being cast aside, REEVES gave the nod to SCORSESE and admitted to being in agreement.

SIDE BY SIDE is slated to open in limited release on 8/17
