John Michael Higgins Talks ‘Great News’ And Chuck Journey

NUP_180940_0507.jpg

One of the funniest moments from this season’s Great News came when co-anchor Chuck Pierce (John Michael Higgins) was adamant about billionaire Fenton Pelt (Jim Rash) being a little box man.

Pierce’s dimwitted nature may be a constant source of irritation for his colleagues, but the bottom line is that he’s still part of “The Breakdown” family.

With Chuck’s job on the line, there will be serious moments featured on Great News’ season finale (airing January 25). Though it’s okay to get emotional regarding Chuck’s fate, Higgins explains why Great News doesn’t get over sentimental with the storytelling. Nicole Richie Brings “Effortless” Comedic Work To ‘Great News’

One of the biggest surprises of Great News is that Nicole Richie is a naturally gifted comedic actress, as she’s held her own with such talented vets as Andrea Martin and John Michael Higgins. While some may remember Richie from her work on reality TV’s The Simple Life, others will gravitate towards her fashion line. Great News has also afforded her an entirely different audience.

“My kids’ friends watch the show and I get bossed around by them all day long,” said Richie. “For them to think that I did something cool felt really good to me.”

Briga Heelan Talks Push And Pull Dynamic Of ‘Great News’

Though she may be a talented news producer who is growing more responsible by the minute, Great News protagonist Katie (Briga Heelan) is still attached to her mother (Andrea Martin). Whether it’s working on the job with her mom or coming to terms that smothering is just part of a mother’s love, Katie must find the balance of gaining more independence while also staying close to her family.

Speaking of family, Heelan discusses the joy of working on Great News. “I’ve learned so much honestly from watching the people that I work with and getting to work with the producers on this show has been unbelievable,” said Heelan. “Just to kind of watch how everyone conducts themselves honestly – it’s such a supportive, lighthearted atmosphere and environment. Everyone talks about family and parenting a lot . . . I’ve actually learned quite a bit about the kind of parent and co-worker that I want to be on this job in addition to learning things while we’re acting.”

Briga Heelan Digs The Comedic “Specificity” Of ‘Great News’

NUP_179925_0671.jpgOne of the many wonderful aspects of NBC’s Great News, now in its second season, is that each member of the ensemble seems to be form fitted to their respective roles. For example acting neophyte Nicole Richie, who plays candid yet often clueless co-anchor Portia Scott-Griffith, attacks her role with the confidence of a vet.

What started off as a mother (Andrea Martin) and daughter (Briga Heelan) relationship at a cable news station blossomed into a well rounded program thanks its gradual evolution. “The writers are so good,” said Heelan. “I just really feel that they so quickly got each of our comedic sensibilities and our strengths and our voices and then just pitched so hard to those so early. That takes seasons sometimes for shows to find that sort of specificity that I think they found really early. They’re just so good.”

Tracey Wigfield Receives “Great News” With Season Two Renewal

NUP_175214_0052.jpgIt’s “great news” for writer Tracey Wigfield’s freshman sitcom as Great News has been renewed by NBC for a second season! Wigfield, who previously worked on 30 Rock (Tina Fey is a producer on Great News) and The Mindy Project, was inspired to create a show that was inspired by her close bond with her mother, and that germ of an idea led to the project.

Great News centers on a hard working news producer (Briga Heelan) who is trying to rise up the ranks within her news station. Complications ensue when her mother (Andrea Martin) gets an intern gig at the station. Nicole Richie, John Michael Higgins and Horatio Sanz are also part of the ensemble.

With the renewal of Superstore and the critically acclaimed The Good Place, NBC’s comedy lineup is back into the swing of things. The network will announce its fall schedule on May 14.
