Nicole Richie Brings “Effortless” Comedic Work To ‘Great News’

One of the biggest surprises of Great News is that Nicole Richie is a naturally gifted comedic actress, as she’s held her own with such talented vets as Andrea Martin and John Michael Higgins. While some may remember Richie from her work on reality TV’s The Simple Life, others will gravitate towards her fashion line. Great News has also afforded her an entirely different audience.

“My kids’ friends watch the show and I get bossed around by them all day long,” said Richie. “For them to think that I did something cool felt really good to me.”

Great News airs Thursday evenings on NBC (9:30/8:30c).

Briga Heelan Talks Push And Pull Dynamic Of ‘Great News’

NUP_180326_1370.JPG

Though she may be a talented news producer who is growing more responsible by the minute, Great News protagonist Katie (Briga Heelan) is still attached to her mother (Andrea Martin). Whether it’s working on the job with her mom or coming to terms that smothering is just part of a mother’s love, Katie must find the balance of gaining more independence while also staying close to her family.

Speaking of family, Heelan discusses the joy of working on Great News. “I’ve learned so much honestly from watching the people that I work with and getting to work with the producers on this show has been unbelievable,” said Heelan. “Just to kind of watch how everyone conducts themselves honestly – it’s such a supportive, lighthearted atmosphere and environment. Everyone talks about family and parenting a lot . . . I’ve actually learned quite a bit about the kind of parent and co-worker that I want to be on this job in addition to learning things while we’re acting.”

Briga Heelan Digs The Comedic “Specificity” Of ‘Great News’

NUP_179925_0671.jpgOne of the many wonderful aspects of NBC’s Great News, now in its second season, is that each member of the ensemble seems to be form fitted to their respective roles. For example acting neophyte Nicole Richie, who plays candid yet often clueless co-anchor Portia Scott-Griffith, attacks her role with the confidence of a vet.

What started off as a mother (Andrea Martin) and daughter (Briga Heelan) relationship at a cable news station blossomed into a well rounded program thanks its gradual evolution. “The writers are so good,” said Heelan. “I just really feel that they so quickly got each of our comedic sensibilities and our strengths and our voices and then just pitched so hard to those so early. That takes seasons sometimes for shows to find that sort of specificity that I think they found really early. They’re just so good.”

Briga Heelan Has “Great News” Behind Andrea Martin Collaboration

Tracey Wigfield, an Emmy award winning writer for 30 Rock, is the creator behind Great News, a workplace comedy that’s set on a national cable news show called “The Breakdown.” Partly inspired by Wigfield’s relationship with her mother, the comedy centers on Katie (Briga Heelan), an ambitious but creatively frustrated news producer whose mother Carol (Andrea Martin) lands an internship at the program. Nicole Richie and John Michael Higgins serve as the co-hosts of “The Breakdown.”

During our interview with Heelan, the actress talked about her immediate bond with Martin. “I didn’t meet her until we started shooting,” said Heelan. “We just locked in real fast. We got each other’s  sense of humor very quickly and she makes me feel so comfortable and safe. I kind of gravitate to her like she is my mom in real life. She’s hysterical and the most fun to work with. It was pretty easy from the beginning with her.”

In the video below, Heelan elaborates on the mother and daughter dynamic of Great News:
