Horror fans have been antipicating the release of CLIVE BARKER’s MIDNIGHT MEAT TRAIN for months so it came as a surprise when the film’s distributor, LIONSGATE, made the announcement that they were moving away from adult themed fare and more into family oriented pictures. With that in mind, MMT was put on the schedule as a direct-to-video title.

But after much on-line protesting, the studio reversed their decision…sort of…and decided to release the film on a meager 102 screens. And, to add insult to injury, reports are that many of those theaters were $1 discount houses. As a result, MIDNIGHT MEAT TRAIN took in an opening week-end total of $32,000 or, $314 per screen. This could be the worst ever tally for a major movie opened on more than 100 screens…EVER!

THE SUN write-up below details the back-story of this fiasco but if, as the story intimates, LIONSGATE is aiming for more family-friendly material then why are there three more films from the SAW franchise still on their roster? Seems odd, no?

HOLLYWOOD OUTBREAK attended a press conference yesterday with WOODY ALLEN in prep for the upcoming release of VICKY CHRISTINA BARCELONA, his romantic comedy starring PENELOPE CRUZ, SCARLETT JOHANSSON and JAVIER BARDEM.

Because the film was shot in Spain, the subject came up of the life-sized statue of ALLEN that was erected in 2002 by the Spanish town of Oviedo. It’s a statue that WOODY calls “one of the great mysteries of western civilization”. Listen in:

HOLLYWOOD OUTBREAK spoke with ROBERT DOWNEY, JR. earlier this afternoon (8/3) about his hilarious role in the upcoming comedy TROPIC THUNDER. We also got into the subject of his summer blockbuster IRONMAN and, while nothing is written in stone, DOWNEY says that there have been discussions about how a sequel should be handled and in which direction the Tony Stark saga should go.

Check it out:

Leaving his STAR WARS role of Obi-Wan Kenobi far behind him, EWAN McGREGOR hits the road starting tomorrow night (8/2) in the Fox Reality Channel’s original returning series THE LONG WAY DOWN.

The show documents the travels of long-time pals, McGREGOR and CHARLIE BOORMAN, as they motorcycle from Scotland to South Africa. It’s a fascinating look at civilian travel through political hotbeds and majestic scenery.

We caught up with McGREGOR at the recent TCA and he explained his long-time love of motorcycles:

The release earlier this week of the official trailer from the much anticipated HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE reminded us that HOLLYWOOD OUTBREAK spoke with DANIEL RADCLIFFE (Harry himself) late last year about how he thought producers were going to handle the filming of HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HOLLOWS (the last and longest epic book in the series).

Of course, at that time no one knew that the book would be made into two films but, even then, RADCLIFFE seemed to know it would be inevitable:
