One would think that kissing Princess Diaries star Anne Hathaway translates into a great day on a movie set.  Not, however, if you’re Steve Carell, her co-star in Get Smart.  Carell unfortunately had to kiss Hathaway while she was not exactly in prime shape for smooching.  The actress relays that experience to Hollywood Outbreak:

TYPE CASTING

13 Jun 2008 Filed under: NEWS OF THE DAY

Earlier this year, when producer/director/writer JUDD APATOW announced casting for his upcoming feature FUNNY PEOPLE, it sounded as though he’d struck the comedy mother lode with ADAM SANDLER, SETH ROGAN and LESLIE MANN.

Now comes the word that he’s added the considerable talents of ERIC BANA, JASON SCHWARTZMAN and JONAH HILL to the ensamble mix. For those wondering how BANA fits into this mix of funny folk, it’s probably news that, before his career took a dramatic turn, he worked as a stand-up comic and starred in two sketch comedy shows in his native Australia.

Reported to be a collaboration of Universal and Columbia Pictures, FUNNY PEOPLE is set in the world of stand-up comedy and centers on a comedian recovering from a near-death experience.

We spoke with APATOW recently and he told us why he enjoys working with actors he’s known for a long time.

It’s just been reported that the WGA writers and writer-producers on Sony’s newly ordered TV animated series Sit Down, Shut Up! have walked off the show scheduled to air in primetime on Fox this fall. It’s a dispute over who has jurisdiction over the writing staff: the WGA or IATSE. The problem is that all the Fox TV animated shows now being broadcast on that network are covered under the WGA contract, so the writers assumed their new show would be as well. Especially because FOX co-owns the show, Sony made the decision to be covered by IATSE. Sit Down, Shut Up!’s showrunner Mitch Hurwitz (of Arrested Development fame), as well as The Simpsons writer-producers Bill Oakley and Josh Weinstein. All the writers/producers are pissed that they struck for four months and now their right to be repped by the WGA is being taken away from them. This is exactly what WGA leadership was afraid would happen as more Big Media companies turn animation over to IATSE’s jurisdiction because of the weaker terms of that union’s contract.

NEWS LEGEND RUSSERT DIES

13 Jun 2008 Filed under: BREAKING NEWS

Word has just hit the interwebs that veteran newsman TIM RUSSERT has died of a heart attack. Full story to follow.via Breitbart

This just in via HD NET: Statements from Dan Rather on the passing of Tim Russert:

June 13, 2008 (New York) - “Tim’s passing is a loss not only to his
family and many friends, it is a loss to good journalism and to our
country.Tim, first and foremost, was devout in his faith and deeply devoted to
his family.  He loved his country with a passion and became a classic
example of the ideal American journalist.

Tim had become an important part of our political process. He will be
especially missed in this historic presidential election year.

Tim Russert was a beacon of quality journalism

At a time when quality journalism is in increasingly short supply, Tim
Russert was a leader for what is best in American journalism.  He was
tough but fair, pulled no punches, played no favorites.

As an interviewer, he had few, if any, peers.”

MISSED IT BY THAT MUCH…

13 Jun 2008 Filed under: MOVIE REVIEWS

GET SMART (110 Min. PG-13 Warner Brothers)  Well, I’m sure it seemed like a good idea to someone at some time (maybe ten years ago when JIM CARREY was set to star) but that was then and this is now.
The Cold War is over, portable phones aren’t funny, STEVE CARREL isn’t DON ADAMS and ANNE HATHAWAY isn’t BARBARA FELDON. Add to that, MEL BROOKS was too busy and BUCK HENRY too ill to participate. Put them all together and you’ve got some pretty lame reasons to go to the movies.
On the up-side: DWAYNE JOHNSON is a STAR!…….

THE INCREDIBLE HULK (114 MINUTES PG-13 UNIVERSAL PICTURES)  Because of the early trailers, I had to be dragged kicking and screaming to see THE INCREDIBLE HULK. That said, I was pleasantly surprised to find the film much more enjoyable than anticipated.
The origin story is kept to a bare minimum, exposition is sparse and the film leaps into action in almost record time. ED NORTON is perfectly cast as the brooding, angsty superhero, WILLIAM HURT seems totally at ease as the obsessed military drone and TIM ROTH is positively gleeful as the villain ultimately known as, THE ABOMINATION. Along the way, there are several sly insider references and cameo roles. The only weak link is LIV TYLER, who seems almost comatose in her delivery.
As spotted in the trailers, the CGI doesn’t always work but when it does, it works great.
It would be easy to nit-pick this movie to death but, the bottom line is that, IT’S BASED ON A COMIC BOOK ! Really, this would be a good time to suspend disbelief and indulge your inner 13-year-old.
Oh, and extra points for the best epilog/set-up ever. THE INCREDIBLE HULK deserves more of a chance than I was originally willing to give it.

As everyone in the galaxy is probably aware, director J.J. Abrams is working on a new “Star Trek” movie… Leonard Nimoy is coming back as the “older” version of Spock – but what’s this?  No William Shatner?  Is it even possible to do a movie that has Captain Kirk… but no Shatner?
