‘The Hangover Part III’ & ‘Fast and Furious 6′ Set For Box Office Showdown

Thanks to roundly bad reviews from critics and horrible word of mouth, The Hangover Part III probably doesn’t have a prayer for Fast and Furious 6, which is receiving reviews all across the board.

Still, a few road blocks shouldn’t keep this comedy from turning a huge profit for Warner Brothers. The Hangover Part II was also considered an inferior outing to the original, but that film made over $254 million domestically, in comparison to Fast Five’s $209 million haul. So even if Fast and Furious 6 has much more momentum riding into this weekend (including a really awesome end credits sequence), maybe The Hangover Part III finishes first this Memorial Day Weekend.

Lens Flair: ‘Fill The Void’ Director Rama Burshtein Shoots From The Heart

Opening Friday, Fill the Void centers on the inner and emotional journey of Shira (Hadas Yaron), an 18-year-old who holds a close bond with her Orthodox Hassidic family. Ensconced in this world of deep faith and tradition, she is more than ready for her own arranged marriage.

When her older sister (Renana Raz) dies during childbirth, Shira is pressured by her mother to marry her late sibling’s husband Yochay (Yiftach Klein). If this awkward courtship fails and Shira rejects this union, Yochay may take his son to Belgium, where another woman is ready for marriage.

Upon first glance, Fill the Void’s Tel Aviv set world will appear foreign to many moviegoers. The narrative’s heart, however, lies in the arresting love story that gradually blooms between the two leads. Yaron and Klein have innate chemistry, and the tension that fills each room they inhabit is, for lack of a better word, palpable. The feature is also armed with director Rama Burshtein’s surefooted storytelling, and the visual compositions she and her cinematographer create on such a low budget reinforces the theory that beautiful looking films can still be shot on the cheap.

During our phone interview with Burshtein, the filmmaker stressed the importance of honesty in storytelling. Fill the Void achieves that goal and thankfully so much more.

Outbreak: The film is beautifully lit and shot, and even though it’s set in a seemingly closed environment the look of the feature gives the narrative a rather expansive and sumptuous feel. Can you talk about how you came up with the visual aesthetic for Fill The Void?

Burshtein: First of all, thank you very much. One of the wisest decisions of the film was to get this photographer, who is totally a genius. His name is Asaf Sudri. This is a very low budget film and we knew it was about the frame and about lighting. The one thing that was very important for me was to try and find a way to show that the real location is the girl’s heart. How do you shoot the heart? We decided that it’s rooms and doors that open and close. It’s close-ups - yet it’s on a widescreen. All we had was the frame so we had to color it right and light it great. We knew we had to depend on the actors and the shots because there was no money there or anything else. He understood me better than I understood myself! I couldn’t ask for more.

Outbreak: How did you find Hadas Yaron for Shira?

Burshtein: I almost closed with another actress and then I decided (the character) had to be younger. So I started auditioning again. I saw all the young girls in Israel. Really, I saw so many girls. None of them brought me what I wanted. And then she walked in. The minute I saw her I just started laughing because I just knew it was her. She was just Shira. It’s very hard to find someone that is just perfect for the role. She auditioned and as my mother used to say, “that’s all she wrote.” I think (finding Hadas) was the most exciting moment of the making of this film.

Outbreak: An author once told me that when his books aren’t finished until the readers actually respond and take ownership of the material. Can you relate to this sentiment?

Burshtein: With this film, the viewers actually make the film. I knew exactly what I was doing, but then when people started seeing it, even in the editing room, everyone saw a different film. It was very weird. Some saw a love film and some saw her as a victim. It moved everyone, but in different ways. I had to let go, and it was very frightening to let go.

When you do a film, it’s all about energy. If nothing really happens, it’s all open to interpretation. So for me the film is owned by the viewers. They decide what this film is about. For me, this project was very interesting and surprising. I’m not a genius to manipulate (the film) in that way.

Outbreak: On a basic level, this is a very specific story. But in a way, do you feel the movie has universal themes?

Burshtein: I think the specific part of it is there are a set of rules in that world. But it’s a love story. That’s very universal. It always is. So I didn’t have a big frame. I’m simple. I’m a storyteller. I’m not about telling a wider story of a world. It’s not me. I’m into very small, detailed stories of humans. So I didn’t mean that. But because of the success of the film around the world, that meant that people related to that small story.

Outbreak: In creating a story, how important is following your instincts throughout the process?

Burshtein: I think what makes a director or a writer talented is having honesty with (themselves), which is very hard. You can write something and know inside that something is not working and say, “Well it’s going to work out when I’m directing it.” And then you lose it.

It’s the process of being honest all the way - that’s the only thing makes a talented writer, director, or an actor. When I teach, I actually teach honesty.

Johnny Depp Heads West With ‘The Lone Ranger’ Trailer

Although Johnny Depp’s career will always be intricately linked with Tim Burton’s body of work, filmmaker Gore Verbinski’s 2003 smash The Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl completely changed Depp’s career. Verbinski directed the first three Pirates films and within the past decade Depp has transformed himself into a bonafide box office draw.

The Verbinski/Depp coupling also yielded the 2011 animated feature Rango, which was their basic ode to the Spaghetti Western genre (as seen through a chameleon’s POV).

Will their streak of hits continue with The Lone Ranger? Westerns are not a foreign concept to Mr. Depp, as witnessed by his haunting turn in the black and white, Jim Jarmusch directed masterpiece Dead Man. The Lone Ranger, featuring Armie Hammer as the masked avenger, looks like it could deliver the goods just based on the trailer, and since Westerns are absolutely difficult to green light in the Hollywood system, we’re hoping this project could is not just a one-off.

Julie Delpy Finds The Right Balance With ‘Before Midnight’

Their youth behind them and now smack dab in domesticity, Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and Celine (Julie Delpy) still know how to hold amazing conversations, but unfortunately conflicts arise which may actually threaten their union in Before Midnight.

Filmmaker Richard Linklater, Delpy, and Hawke continue the close quartered collaboration that made Before Sunrise and Before Sunset such a beloved and intimate experience for many a cinephile, but this time out love (and longing) takes an entirely different shape for the now married couple.

During the Before Midnight press conference, Delpy explains that Celine is a woman who isn’t too nostalgic and would rather move forward and live in the present. Jesse, after years of flourishing as a writer, is one whose mind is consistently shifting back and forth between time periods (one of his new ideas for a novel has an entirely ambiguous, non-linear plotline).

J.J. Abrams: Star Trek Cast Welcomed Cumberbatch & Eve With Open Arms

J.J. Abrams has directed another great Star Trek movie. Star Trek Into Darkness has everything that a sequel should have- great fun, action and most of all, the intriguing new characters “John Harrison” (Benedict Cumberbatch) and “Carol Marcus” (Alice Eve). At times, adding new characters and actors to an already successful previous film can be an issue with the cast. But Abrams credits his cast for welcoming them into the film, and also credits Cumberbatch and Eve, who brought a lot to their respective roles.

Dwayne Johnson Feels Very Fortunate to Have Success

‘Delivery Man’ Trailer Has Vince Vaughn Fathering 533 Kids

Earlier this year, I had the pleasure of checking out the charming comedy Starbuck, a feature directed by Ken Scott about a slacker (Patrick Huard) who discovers he’s the father of 533 kids thanks to his past exploits as a sperm donor.

That picture has now been made, with Scott once again directing, as Delivery Man. For more info on the director’s decision to keep the new version “authentic,” check out our previous post on Starbuck, which you can find here.

Today DreamWorks released a teaser trailer on Fandango for Delivery Man, and although I will always have a slight bias towards the original material, this iteration actually looks promising. Check out the trailer below and tell us what you think!

Making Epic Was a Liberating Experience For Beyoncé

Beyoncé Knowles is a worldwide superstar. Not only is she currently on tour selling out music arenas all over the world, she also voices the character, Queen Tara, in the new family animated film, Epic, which opens in theaters this Friday.

Beyoncé has acted in several movies throughout her career, but hasn’t voiced an animated character until now. For many actors and actresses, voice over work can be a tough and grueling process. Beyoncé explains that it was tough voicing an animated character because it was just her in the studio recording by herself. Michael Douglas Sees ‘Behind The Candelabra’ As A “Beautiful Gift”

Michael Douglas turned in one of his best performances as a drug czar in Steven Soderbergh’s masterwork Traffic, and now years later their collaboration comes full circle with the HBO feature Behind the Candelabra, a project based on Scott Thorson’s relationship with Liberace.

Soderbergh actually approached Douglas about playing the performer on the set of Traffic, and the actor recounts how several years later the director’s kernel of an idea slowly started to take shape.

During the Cannes press conference, Mr. Douglas described his experience on Behind the Candelabra as a “beautiful gift” since he worked on the film right after his battle with cancer. Zach Galifianakis Mixes “Emotion With Comedy” In ‘The Hangover Part III’

Whether it’s his Between Two Ferns segments on Funny or Die or his work on The Hangover films, Zach Galifianakis’ unpredictable and acerbic sense of humor has catapulted him into Hollywood’s A-list. Since his breakthrough on The Hangover, the performer has done scene stealing work in Dinner for Schmucks, The Campaign, and Due Date, not to mention his arresting dramatic turn in the 2010 feature It’s Kind of a Funny Story.

The Hangover Part III finds the mentally unstable Alan (Galifanakis) at the end of his rope following his father’s death and a highway accident involving a giraffe. Although the film is obviously playing Alan’s predicament for laughs, Mr. Galifianakis explained why, when it comes to approaching comedy, infusing his characters with real emotion can actually add depth to a narrative’s comedic tone.

Betty White Recalls Her ‘Golden’ Years

The iconic 1980’s television comedy The Golden Girls, aired its last episode in 1992. Ever since then the show has been airing somewhere around the world everyday on cable. The episodes are still as funny today as they were when they first aired.

Of the show’s four stars, Betty White, is the only surviving cast member. White, who is as popular today as she ever was, stars in the TV Land comedy series Hot in Cleveland. White told us that of all the great characters she has played in her career, it was the role of Rose Nylund that remains her favorite. (Click on the media bar below to hear Betty White)

As fans of the show will all remember, Rose Nylund frequently told funny stories about her days in St. Olaf, a fictional town in Minnesota where she grew up. White recalls filming those scenes, and how her costars Rue McClanahan, Estelle Getty, and Bea Arthur would wait to see if she would screw up her lines because she had to pronounce words she wasn’t use to saying. White also said that she can’t believe she is the only member of The Golden Girls who is still living, and that her Golden Girls co-stars were very special people. The Coen Brothers Venture ‘Inside Llewyn Davis’ At Cannes Fest

Inside Llewyn Davis is the latest cinematic offering from the Coen Brothers, as Joel and Ethan continue to examine highly flawed individuals who, through circumstance and tragedy, eventually either receive their comeuppance or have their lives forever altered. This time out, the main character isn’t a barber (The Man Who Wasn’t There), a neurotic writer (Barton Fink), or even the dude (The Big Lebowski).

The protagonist for this narrative is a highly unlikable folk singer (Oscar Isaac) trying to survive the music scene in 1961 Greenwich Village. The picture also features supporting work from Carey Mulligan, Justin Timberlake, and Garrett Hedlund.

During the Cannes Film Festival press conference for Inside Llewyn Davis, the Coens explained how the film, which is more visually than plot driven, was inspired by late musician Dave Van Ronk.

‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ Disappoints At Box Office With $84 Million Debut

With so much hype surrounding the sequel and the years it took to actually get it made, Star Trek Into Darkness disappointed at the box office, making just $84 million since its May 16th release (it made $70.5 million over the weekend).

The J.J. Abrams directed feature was projected to take in $90-100 million domestically. Although the feature’s budget is estimated at $190 million, the movie should turn in a solid profit for Paramount especially when international box office numbers are added to the mix.

But will the movie suddenly hit warp speed in its second weekend to turn the film into one of this summer’s biggest box office hits? Don’t expect Star Trek Into Darkness to even come close to Iron Man 3’s numbers, and when Fast & Furious 6 and The Hangover Part III hit theaters next week, Star Trek Into Darkness’ main villain may be apathy and not the dreaded Khan (Benedict Cumberbatch).

Benedict Cumberbatch Enters The Dragon In ‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug’

Although he’s gained his share of fans from BBC’s Sherlock and also turned in solid supporting work in War Horse and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Benedict Cumberbatch may find it hard to remain anonymous after his role as John Harrison in Star Trek Into Darkness.

Playing the main villain in the latest Star Trek film should is not the only highlight of Mr. Cumberbatch’s year, as he inhabits the role of the titular dragon in Peter Jackson’s next feature The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

While promoting Star Trek Into Darkness, Cumberbatch talked about working with Jackson on the film and doing motion capture for the feature.

‘Arrested Development’ Cast Cite Favorite Show Moments

With Arrested Development’s fourth season headed to Netflix on May 26th, the cast of the acclaimed show have been doing their share of interviews.

During a promotional trip to London, actors Michael Cera, Tony Hale, David Cross, Jeffrey Tambor, and Alia Shawkat talked about their participation on the series. Even the show was unceremoniously canceled, Tambor prefers to look at the situation in a positive light.

“(Fox) did put us on the air,” said Tambor. “They did pick us. They did have the alacrity to do that. They’re behind this thing with Netflix and hopefully we’ll have a film. I think, as I do about life, that everything has a timing. And our timing was way off. I don’t think they knew what they had, I don’t think we knew what we had, and now we have the best engine we can with Netflix and everyone’s in their proper place, which I kind of knew was going to happen with our show.”

Emma Watson On ‘Harry Potter’ Fame: “I’m Not Trying To Run Away From It”

Emma Watson will always be known as Hermione Granger from the Harry Potter films, but it’s films like My Week With Marilyn, The Perks of Being A Wallflower, and the upcoming The Bling Ring which are helping her build a steady acting life post Potter.

Watson was at the Cannes Film Festival to promote The Bling Ring, which is the true story of how several teenagers robbed the homes of several celebrities in Los Angeles (Paris Hilton’s residence was one of the unfortunate victims of the teenagers’ burglary spree).

During the press conference, Watson was asked if she’s put her Harry Potter experience behind her. “I’m not trying to run away from it,” said the 23-year-old of the franchise. “I’m very proud of the work I did.”

Baz Luhrmann’s Siberian Journey Leads To ‘The Great Gatsby’ Revelation

Director Baz Luhrmann’s journey into getting inspired by and thus developing his version of The Great Gatsby started ten years ago, as the filmmaker was on a train to Siberia. Tinged with a bit of loneliness and accompanied by Australian red wine, Luhrmann revisited Jay Gatsby’s world and realized the F. Scott Fitzgerald classic contained resonant themes that applied to modern day times.

With a budget of $105 million, The Great Gatsby has made $54 million domestically. The cast, as well as Luhrmann, participated at a Cannes Film Festival press conference to talk about the feature, and the director talked about his long road in realizing his latest cinematic vision.

‘Video Games: The Movie’ Launches Kickstarter Campaign

Although some Kickstarter campaigns are started by millionaires who ask for money from the faithful public to finance their latest movies, some projects don’t have an exorbitant or self serving goal. All they need is a little push to help them get money to finish post production.

Video Games: The Movie is an ambitious documentary that’s attempting to cover the history and culture of video games. The project features interviews with luminaries in the gaming industry, including Cliff Bleszinski (Gears of War), ATARI creator Nolan Bushnell, and Blizzard Entertainment CCO Rob Pardo. To anchor the geek/pop culture obsessed section of the documentary, there are also interviews with Wil Wheaton, Chris Hardwick, Alison Haislip (we still miss her presence on The Voice!), and Chronicle screenwriter Max Landis.

The campaign, launched today, is attempting to reach its $60,000 goal by June 18th, and as of this moment, it’s already taken in $11,337.

Zach Galifianakis Remembers “Euphoric” Giggles On ‘The Hangover’

Julianne Moore Explores Motherhood’s Complexities With ‘What Maisie Knew’

Based on a Henry James novel, What Maisie Knew centers on a young girl (Onata Aprile) whose life is drastically affected by the custody battle of her parents (Julianne Moore, Steve Coogan). Moore, who plays a musician who puts her career over her child’s priorities, recently sat down to talk about the challenges working mothers face in their day to day lives. The actress was a bit critical of a New York Times article featuring Michael Pollan and Michael Moss which discussed the importance of cooking a good lunch for one’s loved ones. Cooking for your family is a great thing, but what happens when a working parent just doesn’t have the time?

Greta Gerwig Reflects On Her Adventures In “Studioland”

Greta Gerwig is the co-writer and star of the black and white feature Frances Ha, as she plays an unpredictable woman determined to live out her dreams in New York City. The feature is directed by Noah Baumbach, who previously worked with Gerwig on Greenberg.

Although she’s worked with such beloved filmmakers as Woody Allen (To Rome With Love) and Whit Stillman (Damsels in Distress), Gerwig admitted that she has a hard time landing roles in studio driven films. Although she did play Russell Brand’s love interest in the 2011 feature Arthur, the actress is mainly seen in indie driven projects.

One of Adam Levine’s strengths as a coach on The Voice is his ability to give an honest critique of a singer’s performance, and it’s that candor which has also served him well as the frontman for Maroon 5.

Although getting signed by a record label may be a singer’s dream, Levine believes that artists should try their best to follow their own inner voice. “Try to not ever listen to your record label,” said Levine. “And you should be alright. If you can ever get away without not having to listen to your record label, do it. Do whatever the hell you want to do, or try to.”

2013-14 FOX Lineup Shines with New Shows & Bright Stars

Fox has unveiled its fall programming for this year, and it features several projects that have potential (at least on paper). Topping the list is director J.J. Abrams’ latest TV venture, the Karl Urban and Michael Ealy futuristic series Almost Human. Slated for a late fall release, the show, which will air Monday nights at the 8 pm slot, is set 35 years into the future. Crime fighting is completely different, as evolved androids are a vital part of society. Urban is a cop who’s half machine and his partner (Ealy) is fifty percent robotic!

Sleepy Hollow - Star Trek Into Darkness and Hawaii Five-O producers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci are attempting to make Ichabod Crane (Tom Mison) a modern day protagonist, as Crane is pulled into today’s world to solve crimes with a police officer (Nicole Beharie).

For TV addicts, Braugher is also known for his storied run on one of the finest cop shows in history, Homicide: Life on the Street. The show airs this fall on Tuesday nights (8:30 pm et/pt).

Dads - Everything Seth MacFarlane touches seems to turn to gold, and the big question is will the streak continue with the multi-camera, live action comedy Dads. Seth Green and Giovanni Ribisi play gaming entrepreneurs who’ve been friends since childhood. Their existence takes a turn for the unexpected when their respective fathers (Martin Mull, Peter Riegert) move in! The show will air Tuesday nights at 8 pm et/pt.

Junior Masterchef (working title) - Gordon Ramsay, Joe Bastianich and Graham Elliot are back, but this time they’re tasting food created by kids between the ages of 8 and 13! Will Bastianich give his trademark steely glare to children, and will Ramsay’s brutal critiques make a few kids cry? Graham Elliot is the nice guy, so we’re sure he’ll bond with the budding chefs. The unscripted series airs the fall on Friday nights (8 pm et/pt).

Midseason Fox shows include the animated series Murder Police, a cop show which features the voices of Jane Lynch (Glee), Chi McBride (Golden Boy), and Will Sasso. Us & Them is a sitcom starring Jason Ritter and Alexis Bledel about the adventures of a young couple, and the project is based on the BBC series Gavin and Stacey. Greg Kinnear returns to television with the legal drama Rake, playing a criminal defense attorney with a chaotic personal life, and Christopher Meloni plays a dad in the 1990s, Southern California set series Surviving Jack.

Fans of RZA’s work will be pleased to know that the Wu-Tang Clan leader and former Californication star is featured in the midseason crime series Gang Related. The show centers on a Los Angeles task force who go head to head with the city’s most dangerous gangs. Produced by Brian Grazer, the series was created by Chris Morgan, the screenwriter behind Wanted and Fast Five.

‘Iron Man 3′ Bests ‘The Great Gatsby’ In Box Office Duel

A huge weekend from The Great Gatsby could not stop the Iron Man 3 money train, as the Robert Downey Jr. led franchise took in $72.47 million to remain at the top spot. The Great Gatsby came in at #2 with an excellent $51.1 million showing, with Pain & Gain settling for a distant third with $5.0 million. Here’s the top 10:

1. Iron Man 3 - $72.47 million

2. The Great Gatsby - With a $51.1 million showing, the big question is if there will be a huge drop off in its second weekend.

3. Pain & Gain - $5.0 million

4. Peeples - The latest comedy from Tyler Perry, who produces the film, has a weak debut with just $4.85 million.

5. 42 - $4.65 million.

6. Oblivion - The Tom Cruise sci-fi flick took in $3.86 million, and although its domestic receipts ($81.65 million) are not too impressive, it’s done quite well internationally ($160.9 million).

7. The Croods - $3.6 million.

8. The Big Wedding - Robert De Niro and Diane Keaton couldn’t save this flop of a film, which made just $2.5 million this weekend.

9 Mud - $2.34 million. To date, the Matthew McConaughey indie drama has taken in $8.36 million domestically.

10. Oz The Great and Powerful - $802,000.

Benedict Cumberbatch On J.J. Abrams: “He’s True To His Tastes”

Actor Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays the iconic nemesis Khan in Star Trek Into Darkness (hey the cat’s out of the bag, he’s listed as Khan on the Imdb.com!), lavished director J.J. Abrams with heaps of praise, as he said the filmmaker has the “fervor of a 10-year-old child.”

With such great word of mouth surrounding the latest Star Trek installment, one wonders if Abrams will continue with the voyages of the Enterprise once he takes over the reigns of the next Star Wars picture.

The bottom line is Star Trek Into Darkness

‘Defiance’ Renewed By SyFy For A Second Season

It’s been a good day for the folks at Defiance, as TV Line reports the Syfy series has been renewed for a second season. The news should please both fans of the show as well as devotees of its third person shooter video game. “Bringing the rich world of Defiance to life has been an incredible team effort,” said Syfy head Mark Stern in a statement. “We couldn’t ask for better partners than (showrunner) Kevin Murphy, his amazing cast and crew, and Trion Worlds. We can’t wait to see where they take us in the second season.”

Shooting for the new 13 episodes being August in Toronto, with the second season set to air sometime next year. During our TCA interview with lead actor Grant Bowler, he talked about the appeal of playing Joshua Nolan on Defiance.

‘Arrested Development’ Was A Victim Of “Bad Timing” Says David Cross

To celebrate the highly anticipated return of Arrested Development, Bluth’s Original Frozen Banana stand is making its debut at Radio City Music Hall on Monday, May 13th (11 a.m.).

Whether or not actual food will be served at the stand, it’s just great to see a piece of the program grace the streets of New York.

As for the actual show, season four premieres on Netflix on May 26th, and it’s just amazing to think that 15 more episodes from the beloved series is now in the can.

During a London press conference, actor Jeffrey Tambor talked about reuniting with his fellow cast mates for the show. “The second week into filming, we had all been shooting individually, but in the second week we had all gathered in the Bluth family room, all nine of us and it was around 9 o’clock at night and we were called onto set and there we were amongst pretty much the same crew as well and Mitch (creator Mitch Hurwitz) and all nine of us and we all sort of burst into applause and a non sentimental group were very sentimental for about thirty minutes. It had been six years and there we were in the same living room. It was quite wonderful.”

Eli Roth Finds The Devil In The Details With Chilean ‘Aftershock’

Director Eli Roth produces and stars in Aftershock, playing an American tourist whose dreams of partying in Chile are destroyed after a devastating earthquake rips through the area. In this narrative, Mother Nature brings out the worst in humanity, as the tourist and his friends witness an array of violence and mayhem around them. The picture, directed by Nicolas Lopez, will have its share of gore, yet hopefully the project has its share of chilling moments as well.

During a recent interview to promote his new series Hemlock Grove, Mr. Roth explained why, when it comes to shooting horror and thriller driven features, it’s really not the excessive bloodletting and eviscerating that truly matters. For Roth, the beauty and effectiveness of a truly chilling sequences lies in the details.

Kerry Washington & Craig Robinson Are In The House (Literally) For ‘Peeples’

One of the more important facets in developing chemistry among the actors is the rehearsal process. Since Peeples, the story of a guy (Craig Robinson) who butts heads with his future father-in-law during a Hamptons get together, is a straight out comedy, one would assume that a measure of improvisation was part of the process. Peeples director Tina Gordon Chism, who also penned the script, was more than open to a little spontaneity.

“Tina was very encouraging of our improv and the collaboration,” said Robinson. “We had some rehearsals beforehand and we just got to know each other. For me, improv is a tricky line because you want to be comfortable and free.”

‘The Hangover Part III’ Photos Includes A Wolfpack Reunion With Chow

Warner Brothers has released a bunch of new photos for The Hangover Part III as well as a tad more information on the movie’s plotline.

Billed as the “epic conclusion” to the franchise, the film has Phil (Bradley Cooper), Stu (Ed Helms) and Doug (Justin Bartha) settling into their suburban roles as actual adults, as their hazy days in Las Vegas and drug dealing mobster encounters in Bangkok are far behind them.

Alan (Zach Galifianakis), however, is still searching for a sense of purpose, and now that he’s ditched his medication he’s searching for another big adventure. With Leslie Chow (Ken Jeong) back in the scene to add to all the madness, the motley crew find themselves back to where the insanity began - Las Vegas.

I’m hoping that Hangover newcomer John Goodman knocks his role out of the park, and although it will be hard to top his role of shades wearing, car vandalizing, bowling addict Walter in The Big Lebowski, Goodman should have tons of opportunities to ham it up in the film.

Of course, I’m also looking forward to the return of Heather Graham as Jade, aka Stu’s stripper girlfriend in The Hangover. Will Jade’s return complicate Stu’s marriage with Lauren (Jamie Chung)?

The film hits theaters Thursday, May 23rd, which gives the movie an early jump on the May 24th debuts of Fast & Furious 6 and the animated flick Epic.

Alexander Skarsgard On Shooting ‘What Maisie Knew’ - “It’s a Discovery”

Alexander Skarsgard (True Blood) stars in What Maisie Knew, a modern day version of Henry James’ story about a young girl (Onata Aprile) who is caught in the middle of her parents’ (Julianne Moore, Steve Coogan) custody battle. Skarsgard co-stars in the film as Moore’s companion, who gradually forms a strong and fatherly bond with Maisie.

During the inteviews for What Maisie Knew, Skarsgard talked about the creatively freeing atmosphere on the set. “We tried to create an environment where you’re allowed to make mistakes or if you have an idea, you’ll try it and go in a certain direction,” says Skarsgard. “It might be terrible. But it’s fine. That’s how you stretch and that’s how you explore. I want to be surprised. I don’t want to come to set knowing exactly how the scene is going to play out or where we’re going to end at the end of the day. I felt that (Julianne Moore) was very much on the same page. It’s a discovery.”

Michael Shannon On The Importance of Being A “Thoughtless” Thespian

With such work as Take Shelter, HBO’s Boardwalk Empire, and Revolutionary Road (for which he received an Oscar nod), Michael Shannon stands as one of the more talented actors of his generation.

If you dropped Shannon in a time machine back to the 1970s, he would have easily fit in with such headliners as Gene Hackman, Dustin Hoffman, and Al Pacino, and it’s great to see him take on the highly complex role of killer Richard Kuklinski in The Iceman.

When asked about his acting process, Shannon actually gave a practical answer, as he relies on instinct and awareness rather than overworked intellectual analysis.

“Ultimately you just have to be very thoughtless about it,” said Shannon. “A lot of times what will hang you up when you’re trying to act is your brain gets involved. You start thinking, ‘oh this isn’t right’ or ‘no I shouldn’t say it like this’ or ‘no, I shouldn’t move my hand that way, that’s going to look stupid.’ You do this long enough and you realize your brain is your worst enemy.”

‘The World’s End’ Trailer Features An Epic (& Apocalyptic) Pub Crawl

Fans of director Edgar Wright’s features Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz are probably ecstatic over the debut of his new film The World’s End, which yet again features the comedic talents of Simon Pegg and Nick Frost.

Pegg, who reprises his role as Scotty in Star Trek Into Darkness, plays a 40-year-old dude who gets all his buddies together to engaged in the epic pub crawl they undertook during their youth. Their last stop is at the pub The World’s End, but unfortunately their imbibing and reminiscing takes a drastic turn for the worse.

Usher Has A Leg Up On The ‘The Voice’ Competition

It’s great to see Usher get so invested in his remaining four singers, and his eccentric (yet effective) coaching tactics has helped each of his artists in different ways. This week’s live rounds featured a stellar performance from Team Usher member Michelle Chamuel, who did an inspired rendition of the Cyndi Lauper staple “True Colors.”

During the TCA interviews for The Voice, Usher was asked if he received any flak about having one leg constantly up while sitting in the huge coaches’ chair. “Everybody has their own thing,” said the singer. “So I felt the first thing I should do is (to) be my best self.”

‘Ender’s Game’ Trailer Released With ‘Hugo’ Actor Saving Humanity

Orson Scott Card’s revered bestseller Ender’s Game is one of this year’s most anticipated films, and it’s great to see Harrison Ford return to the sci-fi genre he successfully mined with the Star Wars franchise and Blade Runner. This time out, Ford plays Colonel Hyrum Graff, one of the mentors of Ender Wiggin (Hugo actor Asa Butterfield), a youth who may have the talent and guts to defeat an alien race called the Formics.

The picture also features supporting work from Ben Kingsley (as International Fleet Commander Mazer Rackham), Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit), and The Help actress Viola Davis, who starred with George Clooney in the space drama Solaris.

Julianne Moore Treats Acting Life With A “Certain Humility”

What Maisie Knew is a contemporary adaptation of the Henry James novel, with the story centering on a six-year-old girl whose parents (Julianne Moore, Steve Coogan) are involved in a destructive custody battle. Moore’s character is not exactly an exemplary mother, as she’s mainly focused on her music career (True Blood’s Alexander Skarsgard plays the rocker’s boyfriend).

“Her relationship is to her music,” says Moore. “And that’s where she communicates to everyone. She’s not able to have a relationship with her daughter, or with her husband, or with her boyfriend. It’s simply to the music. And so the times when she’s kind of trying to get closest to Maisie or you feel like she’s communicating is when she’s singing (to her daughter).”

On the point of relationships, Moore explains why she doesn’t get really caught up in the trappings of fame, as she elaborates on the true joy she receives from acting:

Baz Luhrmann Painstakingly Recreates ‘The Great Gatsby’ In Australia

Filmmaker Baz Luhrmann (Strictly Ballroom, Moulin Rouge!) is never one to back down from challenges, and taking on The Great Gatsby is a pretty intimidating feat considering it’s one of literature’s most beloved novels.

Although he was originally set to shoot the film in New York, the Long Island set story had to be moved to Australia for budgetary reasons. During The Great Gatsby press conference, Luhrmann details the challenges he faced recreating F. Scott Fitzgerald’s universe in an entirely different country.

‘The Voice’ Star Judith Hill Finds Herself ‘Twenty Feet From Stardom’

Hill’s journey as an artist is chronicled, along with several other songbirds, in the documentary Twenty Feet From Stardom, a project which takes a look at some of the most talented backup singers to grace the music industry. Along with Hill, performers Darlene Love, Merry Clayton, and Lisa Fischer also discuss the ups and downs of their respective careers. Stevie Wonder, Mick Jagger, and Bruce Springsteen are among the headliners interviewed in the project, which is directed by Morgan Neville (Johnny Cash’s America).

Hill, who worked with Michael Jackson as he prepared for his This is It tour, is seen talking about her own inner conflicts in the trailer for Twenty Feet From Stardom: “When you’re a background singer, there’s a springboard at the beginning, but it can easily become quicksand if that’s not what you want to do.”

‘Frances Ha’ Develops Black & White Aesthetic With Digital Filmmaking

Frances Ha is director Noah Baumbach’s (The Squid and the Whale) feature, and it stars Greta Gerwig as the titular character, a dancer who is trying to live out her dreams in New York City.

During a recent interview, the filmmaker talked about the complexities behind Frances Ha. “I always loved the character, and I felt that she was totally understandable,” says Baumbach. “So I feel like if she’s understandable, then the rest of it kind of it falls where it falls. I understand why this character is struggling. I may not understand why she says the things she says at times but I understand where it’s coming from. I have enormous sympathy for her and I feel she makes heroic decisions.”

Gerwig, who co-wrote the script with Baumbach, also starred in the director’s 2010 feature Greenberg, a dramedy that was headlined by Ben Stiller.

Chris ‘Ludacris’ Bridges reprises the role of Tej Parker for the third time in Fast & Furious 6. Bridges was originally in the first film, The Fast and Furious, back in 2003 and ten years later he is starring in the film franchise again.

There seems to be no end to the popularity of the franchise, and many think each new film has been better than the previous one. Bridges agrees, and says the action and ideas get better and better with each film.

Fast & Furious 6 opens in theaters May 24.

‘Iron Man 3′ Flies The Box Office Skies With $175 Million Debut

Iron Man 3 had a stellar box office debut, as it took in $175.3 million domestically, beating its previous best of Iron Man 2’s $128 million opening two years ago. The picture’s numbers also place it as the second biggest weekend grosser, with The Avengers still standing tall with its $208 million opening.

Coming in a distant second was the Mark Wahlberg/Dwayne Johnson movie Pain & Gain, which took in $7.6 million. Most moviegoers targeted their attention to Iron Man 3, with the rest of the films picking up the remaining box office crumbs. Here’s the top 10:

1. Iron Man 3 - $175.3 million

2. Pain & Gain - $7.6 million

3. 42 - $6.2 million

4. Oblivion - $5.79 million

5. The Croods - $4.23 million

6. The Big Wedding - $3.88 million

Iron Man 3 star Gwyneth Paltrow agrees, and says that Jon Favreau (who plays Happy Hogan, and produced all of the films, and directed the last two) set the bar high for the Iron Man films. She also said that Iron Man 3 is just as good as the last film, and she loved the movie when she saw it.

Channing Tatum Saves The Day In New ‘White House Down’ Trailer

It’s been an amazing couple of years for Channing Tatum, mainly thanks to his successful work with director Steven Soderbergh on Haywire, Magic Mike, and Side Effects. He’s also shown his comedic prowess with 21 Jump Street and continued to cultivate a core chick flick audience with The Vow.

Now he steps into the role of action hero in White House Down, director Roland Emmerich’s latest end of the world scenario feature (he’s also directed Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow, and 2012).

The movie centers on policeman John Cale (Tatum), who unfortunately doesn’t land his dream job as a Secret Service agent. When disaster strikes the White House, he’s the only hope to save the President (Jamie Foxx) and the U.S. from a powerful paramilitary group. The trailer looks pretty solid, and it mixes in a healthy share of humor amidst all the action which, if it works, is always welcome. Our favorite line from the clip: “How do you lose a rocket launcher??”

Dennis Quaid Felt Initial Panic In Crafting ‘At Any Price’ Role

If you’re a fan of Dennis Quaid’s body of work, try to check out his portrayal of Henry Whipple, a business minded farmer who will do anything to keep survive in the new film At Any Price. Zac Efron also gives layered work as Henry’s race car obsessed son Dean, a youth who dreads taking over his father’s life work.

During the preparation for At Any Price, Quaid and director Ramin Bahrani talked for months about the story before the actual first day of shooting took place. Still, Mr. Quaid admitted he felt a tinge of “panic” on the first day the cameras started rolling. It’s great that the actor, after years of crafting a slew of excellent performances, can still get nervous with a new role.

Michael Shannon Unwinds With Space Invaders During ‘The Iceman’ Shoot

‘Iron Man 3′ Director Shane Black Unfazed By Film’s Big Budget Scope

Although he’s penned his share of A-list action films (Lethal Weapon, The Long Kiss Goodnight, The Last Boy Scout), Shane Black has never directed a big budget studio feature until Iron Man 3.

The good news is that Black has a creative shorthand with Robert Downey Jr., as he directed the actor in the 2005 film noir Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. Even with the large scope of Iron Man 3, Black was not intimidated by the process.

‘The Wolverine’ CinemaCon Trailer Unleashes A Silver Samurai

I may be in the minority of people who actually found X-Men Origins: Wolverine entertaining, but still Logan’s first stand alone film left me wanting a bit more.

The Wolverine, which takes our adamantium clawed hero to Japan, is directed by James Mangold, the filmmaker behind the action/comedy Knight and Day and the first rate Western 3:10 to Yuma. Mangold is great at depicting protagonists who are absolutely driven to the point of no return (for proof, check out his masterwork Cop Land), and he’s probably the perfect choice to helm The Wolverine.

The following trailer, which premiered at CinemaCon, features Wolverine taking on the Silver Samurai (Will Yun Lee) as well as a slew of ninjas. Tell us what you think of the footage!!

‘Iron Man 3′ Delivers Noirish Visual Style With The Arri Alexa

Along with a stellar cast, Iron Man 3 boasts one of film’s most revered cinematographers, John Toll. During his career, Mr. Toll has shot Braveheart, The Thin Red Line, Vanilla Sky, The Adjustment Bureau, and last year’s underrated Cloud Atlas.

Director Shane Black and Toll decided to go with the Arri Alexa to film Iron Man 3, and during one of the film’s several press conferences Robert Downey Jr. talked about the visual style behind the movie.

Jesse Spencer Goes To His “Zen Place” With ‘Chicago Fire’

Playing a firefighter on Chicago Fire has its challenges, and even though in the end it’s still acting, a healthy share of physical and mental acumen is required to push through some of the show’s more intense scenes.

“We have a really great team,” says Jesse Spencer, who plays Lieutenant Matthew Casey on the program. “We have a safety team that make sure that the smallest amount of things won’t go wrong. We have been pretty good up until now, we’ve had no major injuries or anything. You’ve really got to be able to go into some sort of zen place because you’re stuck in an uncomfortable situation for long periods of time. You need to be able to breathe and go to your happy place (laughs).”

‘The Voice’ Coach Blake Shelton Feels A Loyalty To Team Blake

On tonight’s two hour installment of The Voice, the knockout rounds continue with performances from Team Blake and Team Usher.

Since two out of the three winners from The Voice came from Mr. Shelton’s camp, the big question lies on whether Shelton has a strong enough roster to win it all once again this season (Adam Levine’s squad, which features singer Judith Hill, is pretty loaded with talent).

During a recent interview, Blake talked about getting attached to the contestants on The Voice, as he admitted that there are certain grey areas that a coach has to navigate on the show.

“You do feel a loyalty to the ones that picked you to begin with after you picked them,” said Shelton. “(But) if you’re really doing your job as a coach, you have to make the decision based on talent and not on a relationship, and that’s tough.”

Sylvester Stallone: Why Rocky Still Hits Home With Audiences

Just when you think there aren’t enough movies being turned into Broadway musicals, it’s time to get ready for another. Rocky, one of the greatest sports movies of all time (which Sylvester Stallone wrote, produced and starred in as the iconic boxer Rocky Balboa), is being turned into a musical. It is due to open on Broadway in February, 2014.

Stallone released the following statement about the musical, “I couldn’t be more proud or more excited about this production and how my original story of Rocky Balboa has been brought to spectacular life onstage.”

Gay Athletes: Kurt Warner Looks For a Developing Out Pattern

Today is a historic day in American sports history. Jason Collins, who plays for the NBA’s Washington Wizards, sat down in an interview with Sports Illustrated and announced that he is gay, making him the first active player in a major American team sport to announce that he is gay.
Collins said, “I didn’t set out to be the first openly gay athlete playing in a major American team sport. But since I am, I’m happy to start the conversation.” Collins had a lot of support from his fellow NBA Players. NBA great Kobe Bryant tweeted “Proud of @jasoncollins34,” the tweet read, “Don’t suffocate who u r because of the ignorance of others #courage #support #mambaarmystandup #BYOU”.

NBA Commissioner David Stern said in a statement, “As Adam Silver and I said to Jason, we have known the Collins family since Jason and Jarron joined the NBA in 2001 and they have been exemplary members of the NBA family. Jason has been a widely respected player and teammate throughout his career, and we are proud he has assumed the leadership mantle on this very important issue.”

Not surprisingly, there have also been ignorant comments, such as that of NFL player Mike Wallace, current Miami Dolphins Wide Receiver, who tweeted, “I’m not bashing anybody don’t have anything against anyone I just don’t understand it…All these beautiful women in the world and guys wanna mess with other guys SMH…” He quickly took that down and tweeted a new message saying, “Never said anything was right or wrong I just said I don’t understand!! Deeply sorry for anyone that I offended.”

Last week, we spoke to former All Pro and Super Bowl MVP Kurt Warner, who is the host of the USA Network show The Moment. He told us that he has no problem with having gay teammates, and that people should never step in the way of sexual orientation. (Click on the media bar below to hear Kurt Warner).

2 Broke Girls Creator: The Humor on the Show is Fun, Sophisticated & Naughtly

The CBS hit comedy 2 Broke Girls is an adorable and extremely funny show. The show reminds us of a more mature version of Laverne & Shirley. The shows two stars Kat Dennings and Beth Behrs are both great comedic actresses. Through the two seasons the show has been on the air, some have criticized its mature humor. Sure there may be some very adult jokes, but they suit the characters and style of the show.

The show’s co-creator, Michael Patrick King, is no stranger to creating adult shows (he also wrote & produced Sex and the City). Patrick says he considers the jokes really classy dirty humor, but said that if the show only consisted of dirty jokes he wouldn’t be happy. ‘Defiance’ Actress Julie Benz Has Exceeded Her Own Expectations

One would be hard pressed to find a more versatile actress on television than Julie Benz. Her work on the Joss Whedon shows Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Angel, as well as her turn as Rita Bennett on Dexter are just a few of the standout bullet points on her acting resume (she also had a nice supporting turn in the short-lived CBS series A Good Man).

Now Benz is back for the new series Defiance, a Syfy show that actually draws a connection between the actual program and a video game that is based on the series.

One of the pleasant surprises of the fourth season of The Voice lies in its seamless transition with new coaches Shakira and Usher. The pair replaced Christina Aguilera and Cee-Lo for this season, and they have managed to cultivate a natural chemistry with show vets Adam Levine and Blake Shelton.

“I was actually telling the guys that I usually hate to watch myself on TV,” says Shakira during the TCA panels. “I don’t enjoy listening to my own music or seeing myself in my own videos or any of that. But I do enjoy on Mondays and Tuesdays actually watching the show because I think it’s so entertaining.”

‘Last Resort: The Complete Series’ Heads To DVD In July

Each season, there are quality shows that just don’t find a sizable enough audience to warrant a second season. Producers Shawn Ryan and Karl Gajdusek’s twist filled series Last Resort, which centered on the crew of U.S. nuclear submarine caught in the crossfires of a huge conspiracy, suffered such a fate. One of the show’s major strengths lies in the complex relationship between Captain Marcus Chaplin (Andre Braugher) and XO Sam Kendal (Scott Speedman), and the continued secrets that were unveiled about the characters added to Last Resort’s inspired narrative.

On July 2nd, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment is releasing Last Resort: The Complete Series on DVD, and the three-disc collection features all 13 episodes with a slew of accompanying featurettes.

One of featurettes I’m waiting to check out is “Epilogue,” in which the cast and crew talk about the show’s final episode, “Controlled Flight Into Terrain.” The segment will also have speculation on the characters’ fate after the show’s final moments. Other featurettes on the collection include “Subvirtual,” which takes a look at the visual effects of the series, and “Grace Under Fire,” which centers on the evolution of one of the show’s main characters, determined Lieutenant Grace Shepard (Daisy Betts).

The ABC series also stars Autumn Reeser (The O.C.) and Robert Patrick (The Unit).

Mark Wahlberg Makes Movies He Likes

Mark Wahlberg has had an amazing career. He started off as a Calvin Klein model, then had a successful music career with Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch, and ultimately made the transition into film, becoming one of the biggest movie stars in the world.

Since Wahlberg made his big screen debut in Penny Marshall’s 1994 comedy Renaissance Man, it’s been nonstop for him. Whalberg, who currently stars in the box office hit Pain & Gain, has made over 30 films in his career, including the great films, Boogie Nights, The Fighter, and The Departed, which earned him an Academy Award nomination.

He has also made some films that he admits weren’t very good. Wahlberg told us that he made all of his choices for a specific reason, mostly to work with the filmmakers and gain experience, and only within the last decade has he made films that he believes the audience would want to see him in. ‘Pain & Gain’ Flexes Box Office Muscle With $20 Million Debut

As expected, Pain & Gain was the #1 film at the box-office, taking in $20 million. Although those numbers aren’t astounding, the movie cost an estimated $26 million and it should continue to do strong business next weekend, even if it will be dwarfed by the release of Iron Man 3.

Second place went to the Tom Cruise sci-fi film Oblivion, and to date the picture has made $64 million in domestic markets and $112 million internationally. With a budget of $120 million, the picture is another solid box office performer for Mr. Cruise.

The Robert De Niro/Diane Keaton comedy The Big Wedding wasn’t so big after all, as it limped to a fourth place finish with just $7.5 million. Here’s the top 10:

‘Beyond: Two Souls’ Previews New Footage At Tribeca Film Festival

Video game developers Quantic Dream, the makers behind the critically beloved title Heavy Rain, are continuing their passion for cinema inspired narratives with Beyond: Two Souls.

The game’s director, David Cage, as well voice actors Ellen Page (Juno), Willem Dafoe), Kadeem Hardison (A Different Worlds), and Eric Winter (TheMentalist) participated at a Saturday panel discussion at the Tribeca Film Festival to talk about the game, which was recognized as an official selection at the fest for its impact on the “Future of Film.”

“This has been a really intense and exciting experience for me, and one that I am extremely proud of,” said Page. “I’m excited to see everyone’s reaction to the extended scene we are going to be screening - and to feel the powerful emotion that David Cage instills in all his games.”

Beyond: Two Souls centers on 15 years in the life of a youth named Jodie Holmes (Page), a girl who has an inextricable connection to a mysterious entity. The sequence featured at the fest, titled “Homeless,” has Jodie struggling to survive the next meal without a roof over her head or a family to depend on.

“This is a momentous event both in the world of gaming and in the history of the Tribeca Film Festival,” said Dafoe. “Beyond: Two Souls tells a beautiful story and the players can wholly participate in each scenario and choose the characters’ action. This game is unlike any project that I’ve ever been involved with before.”

The game comes out October 8th, 2013 for the PlayStation 3.

Leonardo DiCaprio: The 3D in The Great Gatsby Is Intense

One of most intriguing films to be released this year is The Great Gatsby, directed by Baz Luhrmann. While there have been other adaptations of the classic novel made for the big screen and television, it never made the great transition from book to the screen. However, Luhrmann’s version may be what movie fans have been waiting for. Not only does the film feature a superb cast (led by Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, and Carey Mulligan), the movie was shot in 3D.

A film drama filmed in 3D is unheard of, but if you watch the trailer, you can see how beautiful the film looks in 3D. Leonardo DiCaprio thinks the film being shown in 3D is like a theater production, and feels the 3D will be intense and that the audience will feel that. Zachary Quinto: New ‘Star Trek’ Villain’s Intense!

Adam Levine Takes The High Road When Questioned About The Voice vs. American Idol

For the past few seasons, the NBC talent music show The Voice has beaten FOX’s American Idol in the ratings and popularity. In years past American Idol ruled television, pulling in over 20 million viewers a night. But this season, Idol is at its lowest in ratings, while The Voice’s ratings are on the rise and are easily beating Idol each week.

This week Adam Levine was asked why he thinks The Voice is beating American Idol. While Levine is known to be outspoken on his views, he gave a politically correct answer, saying that he and the show don’t get involved in a war of words. Dwayne Johnson Says ‘Pain & Gain’ Is A Love Letter To Miami

With Transformers filmmaker Michael Bay directing Dwayne Johnson and Mark Wahlberg in Pain & Gain, it’s pretty obvious that the film will draw a sizable audience this weekend. Expect the movie to edge The Big Wedding as the #1 film, and one is assuming Paramount wants the flick to have a huge opening since Iron Man 3 opens up the following weekend.

During the Pain & Gain press conference, Dwayne Johnson said the film is a love letter to Miami. A longtime resident of the area, Mr. Johnson says he’s pretty much “embedded” in the Miami community.

‘Iron Man 3′ Clip Features An Emotionally Scarred Tony Stark

The newest clip released for Iron Man 3 features Tony Stark sans the devil may care bravado, as the recent events from The Avengers have left him emotionally scarred.

Robert Downey Jr. has never been one to shy from vulnerability, and it’s great to see him have a tender moment with Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) in the following scene. Obviously Iron Man 3’s bread and butter lies in the high flying action sequences we’ve come to know and love, but it’s Stark’s battles with his own personal demons which makes him more than just a man in a high powered suit.

Nintendo Wii U Update Released, Promises Faster Functionality

The Nintendo Wii U update that fans have been waiting for is now available for download, as Nintendo released a press announcement this morning regarding the excellent news.

Along with faster load times and improved performance, as well as setting the table for the upcoming Wii U Virtual Console service, this update has a bunch of improvements.

“Wii U continues to grow and evolve with new features that make it a better experience for everyone,” said Nintendo of America’s president and COO Reggie Fils-Aime. “Now owners can navigate to their favorite games and services even faster, or play some of their favorite classic games.”

Here are the updates, as stated in the press release:

The time required to start the Wii U console, launch built-in applications, exit software and return to the main menu, jump between applications, and jump between software and Miiverse has been reduced.
While the Wii U logo is being displayed during the system startup, users can directly transition to the Wii Menu by holding down the B Button on the Wii U GamePad.
Users can install games and applications from the Nintendo eShop in the background while other software is being used.
When powering off during a download, Wii U will go into a standby mode, then power off when all downloads and installations are complete.
Users can transfer and copy data between two USB storage devices in Data Management. This allows users the opportunity to upgrade or replace a current USB storage device that is connected to the Wii U Console.
Users can control the priority of their downloads when downloading multiple items at once.
Improved account selection when powering on the system now displays Nintendo Network IDs to clearly distinguish accounts.
TV screen size output can now be adjusted in the System Settings.
An Undo/Redo button was added to the Miiverse drawing input screen.

It’s the hugest update since the console’s launch last November, and it’s great to see the Nintendo Wii U gain positive momentum with E3 just around the corner.

Screenwriting Survival Guide From Pretty Woman Producer Lands On Kickstarter

Whether it’s Zach Braff or the team behind Veronica Mars, Kickstarter has become a viable way for filmmakers to truly get their project off the ground. But what about individuals who want to make it in the entertainment industry as screenwriters?

Of course there’s tons of books out there for wannabe scribes, and if you’ve lived in Los Angeles, there’s a good chance you’ve thumbed through Screenplay by Syd Field, Aristotle’s classic Poetics, Story by Robert McKee and even Joseph Campbell’s seminal work The Hero With A Thousand Faces. These are all interesting and enlightening looks on how to shape a narrative (most people, however, would err on the side of Aristotle and Campbell).

Gary W. Goldstein, a producer whose credits include Pretty Woman, Under Siege, and the highly underrated supernatural drama The Mothman Prophecies, is working on a book which aims to help fledgling writers navigate their way through the shark infested, networking crazed canals of Hollywood. Goldstein’s Kickstarter goal is to raise $12,000 by Friday, May 24th, and as of this post $2,238 has already been pledged.

The $12K will go to a professional editor, jacket design, and most importantly an initial, independent print run of 1,000 copies. For a minimum $15 pledge, Kickstarter backers will receive a digital copy of the book when it comes out. If you have deep pockets, the top pledge (available for 1 bidder) is at $4,000, and that level gets you a featured guest spot on Goldstein’s upcoming web series Naked Wisdom.

‘At Any Price’ Filmmaker Gets Valuable Advice From Werner Herzog

The collaboration between a director and actor is one of the most important elements in making a first rate feature, and the new movie At Any Price is thankfully part of that group.

The story of an ambitious farmer (Dennis Quaid) who will commit nothing short of murder to keep his business afloat, At Any Price was directed by Ramin Bahrani, a filmmaker whose known to cinephiles for such films as Man Push Cart and Chop Shop.

At Any Price, which features stellar work from Quaid and Zac Efron, should open more doors for Bahrani, who’s proven that he can infuse a character driven narrative with visual scope (Bahrani channeled such filmmakers as John Ford and Arthur Penn in making At Any Price).

During the interviews, Bahrani and Quaid were pretty frank about their collaborative process, and Bahrani even admits he had difficulties with Quaid on the first couple of days of production. In fairness, Quaid was a bit tired at the time, as he had just finished shooting The Words with Olivia Wilde. It was an important piece of advice form director Werner Herzog (seen this year as the villain in Jack Reacher) which helped Bahrani realize that a bit more faith should be put in Quaid’s hands.

‘Thor: The Dark World’ Teaser Hammers Away At New Villain

The trailer for Thor: The Dark World was released this week, and although Loki (Tom Hiddleston) is always a welcome adversary, it’s refershing that he’s not the main villain this time around.

Those honors go to Malekith (Christopher Eccleston), a destructive force who is a threat to the entire universe, not just Asgard.

Although Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) look more like best buddies than soul mates, at least they have some semblance of chemistry. This connection is needed for the trailer’s final moments, which suggests that Foster’s life is clinging to the balance amidst the hands of Malekith.

It’s not entirely out of the question for Foster to die in Thor: The Dark World, as various Marvel superheroes (Wolverine, Spider-Man, Captain America, Sub-Mariner) have suffered the loss of loved ones. Plus the film’s director, Alan Taylor, has directed his share of Game of Thrones episodes, so unexpected deaths are nothing new to him.

Michael Bay Likes the ‘Pain’

For the past several years, much of Michael Bay’s attention has been focused on directing and producing the past three Transformers films, which he has worked on since 2005. After finishing the last Transformers movie, Transformers: Dark of the Moon, Bay wanted to do an entirely different kind of film. He decided to direct Pain & Gain, which is based on a true story, and stars Mark Whalberg and Dwayne Johnson.

Nick Lachey Excited For The Package Tour

Nick Lachey has made a nice career for himself. Once the lead singer of the boy band 98 Degrees, which found success in the late 90’s, Lachey has made the transition from singer to host. He has hosted many talent shows, including the new upcoming reality series, The Winner Is, which will be premiering this summer on NBC.
Even with the success that Lachey has enjoyed the past several years, he hasn’t forgotten about his music roots with 98 Degrees. In fact, the group is reuniting and going on tour with Boyz II Men and New Kids on the Block later this year. The tour is called “The Package Tour.” Ticket sales for the concert are doing really well and Lachey told us that he is not surprised. ‘Deadly Premonition: The Director’s Cut’ Trailer Serves A Bloody Cup Of Coffee

I love a good mystery, and the more abstract the investigation becomes (i.e. Twin Peaks and even The Killing) the better.

That’s why Rising Star Games’ Deadly Premonition: The Director’s Cut will be the first PlayStation 3 title I’ve played in eons when it comes out April 26th.

Created by Hidetaka “Swery” Suehiro, the open world game centers on special agent Francis York Morgan’s attempts to solve a young girl’s murder in the apparently sleepy small town of Greenvale. During his journey, Morgan bumps into supernatural elements which does a number on his mental state, and one would assume the locals aren’t too emotionally balanced either.

Fans who pre-order the title from Amazon.com will receive an exclusive Field Ops suit that increases Morgan’s hit points and attack prowess. If you want to pre-order the game via GameStop, you’ll get an Espresso Suite which gives you stronger tolerance to hunger and exhaustion.

I never played the Xbox 360 version when it came out in 2010, but the trailer below, which has a nice mix of chills and a few bloody spills, has caught my attention. The game received strong reviews upon its initial release, and hopefully this thriller won’t disappoint.

‘Iron Man 3′ Reveal - Is Pepper Potts A Superhero?

The continued evolution of Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) has been one of the more underrated developments in the Iron Man franchise. Potts’ growth, however, may take a monumental turn with Iron Man 3, as Paltrow hinted that Tony Starks’ (Robert Downey Jr.) trusted soulmate may actually become a superhero!

Since we haven’t seen Iron Man 3, we actually have no idea what she’s talking about, but we have a few guesses. Could Potts’ supposed superhero powers stem from the Iron Man armor developed by Tony Stark? Or was there some kind of supernatural exchange in some kind of confrontation with The Mandarin? Maybe Paltrow meant superhero in a figurative manner, and Potts really doesn’t have any powers whatsoever.

‘The Heat’ Is On Sandra Bullock & Melissa McCarthy

Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy team up in the action comedy The Heat, opening in theaters June 28. When an FBI Agent (Bullock) and a police detective team up to capture a Russian mobster, mayhem ensues. The film is directed by Paul Feig, who previously directed the comedy box office hit Bridesmaids (which garnered McCarthy an Oscar nomination).

Director Ramin Bahrani Has Widescreen Ambitions With ‘At Any Price’

Dennis Quaid is Henry Whipple, an ambitious and manipulative farmer whose past actions slowly come back to haunt him in the new drama At Any Price. Zac Efron also gives a solid performance as Henry’s son, a thrill seeking youth who only has eyes for a racing career. The bonds of family are very tight, however, and when an unforeseen event occurs, the Whipples have to figure out a way keep their family, as well as their business alive.

Filmmaker Ramin Bahrani (Chop Shop, Man Push Cart), who lived with farmers in Iowa for six months for research, has a strong feel for America’s heartland, giving the film a widescreen, expansive depth that makes adds an unexpected visual layer to At Any Price.

Christina Milian is once again the social media correspondent for The Voice. Although she doesn’t share the stage with judges Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, Shakira, and Usher, Milian is front and center when it comes to connecting the audience with the contestants.

Whether it’s through video interviews after the blind auditions and battle rounds, Milian, like host Carson Daly, is pretty much with the aspiring singers each step of the way.

Milian has had a solid show business career, as she’s carved out a foothold as both a singer and as an actress. During our interviews with the entertainer, she gave some important advice for The Voice contestants.
