Since its debut 51 years ago Star Trek has grown into a phenomenon that creator Gene Roddenberry never could have imagined in his wildest dreams. With more than a dozen movies released and a sixth TV series about to premiere, Trek is one of the most prolific and successful franchises ever. Alex Kurtzman, who is a producer and writer on the new show, Star Trek: Discover, is very familiar with the Star Trek universe, having written the 2009 Star Trek film and its sequel, Into Darkness. Why does he think the franchise continues to thrive? He attributes it to Roddenberry’s original optimistic vision.  (Click on the media bar below to hear Alex Kurtzman)

Star Trek: Discovery debuts on the CBS All Access streaming service, though non-subscribers will be able to preview the series when the CBS television network broadcasts the premiere episode Sunday, September 24 at 8:30/7:30c.
