After five seasons playing the iconic character Norman Bates on A&E’s Bates Motel, Freddie Highmore has checked out of the hotel business and into the hospital for his new role, starring on ABC’s new medical drama The Good Doctor. The show is produced by David Shore, who previously created House. And like the flawed title character on that show, Highmore’s character will also be brilliant, but socially challenged. But while Dr. House was a misanthrope, Dr. Shaun Murphy’s problems come from a different place: He’s got autism and Savant Syndrome. It will be a challenging role for Highmore, but that was part of the reason why he wanted the part so badly. (Click on the media bar below to hear Freddie Highmore)

The Good Doctor premieres Monday, September 25 on ABC.
