Steven Spielberg’s highly anticipated film Ready Player One appears to be an intriguing mix of past and future. The movie, based on Ernest Cline’s novel, takes place in a dystopian future where people work and play in a virtual reality world called the OASIS. When the founder of OASIS dies, a competition he’s created is held to give away his fortune and ownership of his virtual world. And that’s where the past comes in: Anorak’s Game is filled with homages to ’80s pop culture, including Back to the Future’s Delorean, Knight Rider’s K.I.T.T., and The A-Team’s van, along with appearances by characters from the DC Comics universe and A Nightmare on Elm Street’s Freddy Krueger. Of course, Spielberg’s own movies were a big part of that era, which left him with a big choice: Would he acknowledge his own ’80s projects or not? (Click on the media bar below to hear Steven Spielberg)

Ready Player One opens in theaters on March 30, 2018.
