The Hero, a drama which many consider one of Sam Elliott’s best performances, hits Blu-ray and DVD September 19 via Lionsgate. Elliott (The Big Lebowski) is Lee Hayden, a once successful actor who’s now earning a living doing voiceover work. Along with reminiscing about the golden days with his former co-star (and current drug dealer) Jeremy (Nick Offerman), Lee is also attempting to reconcile with his estranged daughter (Jessica Jones’ Krysten Ritter). Laura Prepon is Charlotte, a stand-up comic who, although forty years his junior, strikes up a relationship with the actor.
The flick is directed and co-written by Brett Haley, who previously worked with Elliott in the well received 2015 feature I’ll See You In My Dreams. Special features on the disc includes audio commentary from Haley and Elliott as well as a photo gallery.
Along with his work, another feature which features a standout Elliott performance is the Lily Tomlin headlined drama Grandma. Click on the media bar below to hear Elliott talk about the creative freedom of that film:
The Hero also co-stars Elliott’s wife Katherine Ross (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Graduate).
