On this week’s episode of CinemAddicts, we cover director Gore Verbinski’s (Rango, The Lone Ranger) latest effort A Cure for Wellness and the horror anthology XX.
In A Cure for Wellness, Dane DeHaan is an ambitious executive named Lockhart who’s sent to the Swiss Alps to retrieve the company’s missing CEO. Upon entering the wellness center, Lockhart is immediately thrown in a different direction and must use his wits to escape this mysterious and ultimately dangerous environment. Filled with eels, twists, and a humongous running time (146 minutes), A Cure for Wellness ended up being a less than stellar cinematic experience.
Featuring the directing talents of Jovanka Vuckovic, Annie Clark, Roxanne Benjamin, and Karyn Kusama, XX is a horror anthology that injects a bit of black comedy into its dark storytelling. Unfortunately, it’s only Vuckovic who scores with the intriguing story The Box. Centering on a family that’s gradually undone by a man who owns a red box, the short pulls us in right from the jump. Unfortunately, the rest of the shorts are mainly a forgettable affair.
