On this week’s episode of CinemAddicts, we review La La Land, the Damien Chazelle (Whiplash) directed musical which is a shoo-in for a Best Picture Oscar nomination.
The Los Angeles set story, which is inspired by the Jacques Demy films The Umbrellas of Cherbourg and The Young Girls of Rochefort, centers on the relationship between a struggling actress (Emma Stone) and jazz musician (Ryan Gosling). The picture also features a cameo from J.K. Simmons, the Oscar winning best actor from Whiplash. Though the picture features inspired craftsmanship from Chazelle and is a first rate moviegoing experience, it has a few flaws (which are discussed on the podcast).
Isabelle Huppert, seen this year in Louder Than Bombs and Elle, gives a terrific performance in Things To Come as a philosophy professor who’s experiencing her share of struggles. Whether it’s her husband’s decision to separate or her mother’s mental deterioration, Nathalie’s is not having a great year. For cinephiles who love intimate, nuanced dramas, Things to Come is a worthwhile watch.
The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, Sour Grapes, and Zootopia are also discussed on this week’s show. Click on the media bar to hear CinemAddicts.
