With Deadline reporting a solid weekend for Identity Thief, things are definitely looking up for this Melissa McCarthy/Jason Bateman comedy. If all goes well, Identity Thief will be another box office hit for director Seth Gordon, who previously helmed the hit comedy Horrible Bosses.
During the Identity Thief press conference, McCarthy was asked if there were any comedic lines she wouldn’t cross.
“For me as long as it makes sense for the character, I like to see if you can, on their worst day or their most extreme circumstance, I like to see how far you can push it,” said McCarthy, whose movie career skyrocketed thanks to Bridesmaids. “To me it’s not funny anymore if it doesn’t make sense…and I really don’t like to do anything that’s mean spirited. I don’t find it funny. I think it’s better to…I’d rather be the jackass than make fun of somebody else. It just seems too cheap and easy.”
