Argo (CR: Warner Bros. Pictures/Claire Folger)

Director/actor Ben Affleck’s critically revered feature Argo topped the competition over the weekend with a $12.4 million haul and a first place finish, beating out newcomer Cloud Atlas, which limped to a third place finish with a paltry $9.4 million.  Amidst all its hype and star pedigree (Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Hugh Grant), Cloud Atlas was a big disappointment at the box office.

Hotel Transylvania continued its excellent run with a $9.5 million weekend, good enough for second place, with Paranormal Activity 4 coming in fourth with $8.7 million.  Silent Hill: Revelation 3D also had a sub-par debut, mustering up just $8.5 million.

Rounding out the top five are Taken 2 (#6, $8 million), the Kevin James comedy Here Comes The Boom (#7, $5.5 million),  the low budget yet profitable horror film Sinister (#8, $5.1 million), the disappointing Alex Cross (#9, $5.0 million), and Pitch Perfect (#10, $4 million).
