Paranormal Activity 4 proves that the scare franchise is still going strong, as Deadline reports the film debuted at the #1 box office spot with $30 million. The picture, whose budget is estimated at $5 million, is a solid money maker for Paramount, and it easily beat out the rest of the field. Ben Affleck’s critically beloved Argo, which should maintain its momentum thanks to good word of mouth, came in second with $16.7 million, bringing its two week domestic total to $43.3 million. Taken 2 is still attracting moviegoers, as the Liam Neeson action flick was #3 with $13.3 million. One of this year’s top hits is the animated feature Hotel Transylvania, which checked in at #4 with $13.2 million. Featuring the voices of Selena Gomez and Adam Sandler, the feature has collected $118.7 million domestically.
Tyler Perry’s star power did not save Alex Cross from a disappointing opening weekend of $12 million, as the picture limped to fifth place. Co-starring Matthew Fox as Alex Cross’ nemesis , the film was directed by The Fast and the Furious filmmaker Rob Cohen.
The horror film Sinister did reasonably well in its second weekend with a sixth place finish and $8.9 million. With a budget of $3 million, the Ethan Hawke led feature has totaled over $31.8 million during its run. Rounding out the top ten are the Kevin James comedy Here Comes The Boom (#7, $8.5 million), Pitch Perfect (#8, $6.8 million), Tim Burton’s passion project Frankenweenie (#9, $4.3 million), and Looper (#10, $4.1 million)
