league_of_their_own_ver2Arguably one of the greatest baseball movies made, A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN was recently released on Blu-ray to commemorate its 20th anniversary. Proving without a doubt that there was a place on screen for a female-driven sports movie, the film took in over $100 m at the box office on a reasonable $40 m budget. Inspired by actual events, the movie focused on the business of female ballplayers during World War II, was directed by PENNY MARSHALL and starred TOM HANKS, GEENA DAVIS, MADONNA, ROSIE O’DONNELL and LORI PETTY.
We sat down with HANKS just prior to the original 1992 theatrical release of A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN and he talked about why he wanted to go against type to play a burnt-out manager trying to stay in the game. (CLICK ON THE MEDIA BAR FOR AUDIO)

Shot largely on location, the cast and crew had plenty of time for off-screen bonding. HANKS joked about how they killed time when not making a movie. (CLICK ON THE MEDIA BAR FOR AUDIO)
