Airing tonight on Lifetime, STEEL MAGNOLIAS is a remake of the 1989 big-screen adaptation of ROBERT HARLING’S award-winning play celebrating the enduring friendship of six very unique Southern women. With iconic performances by the likes of SHIRLEY MacLAINE, DOLLY PARTON, JULIA ROBERTS and SALLY FIELD it would seem a tough act to follow but producers CRAIG ZADAN and NEIL MERON have changed things up by going with an all-African-American cast that includes such talent as ALFRE WOODARD, PHYLICIA RASHAD, JILL SCOTT and the stunning QUEEN LATIFAH (who steals the show with an unforgettable heartfelt performance). One might think that finding some kind of harmony in an ensemble cast of such strong personalities would be tough but, during an interview we did a couple of years ago, QUEEN LATIFAH talked about how playing team sports as a girl prepped her for the teamwork needed in making a movie.
