Resident Evil: Retribution easily beat all comers in its debut weekend, as it took in $23 million at the box office. Based on a popular videogame, the Resident Evil franchise, although it is lambasted by most film critics, continues to churn out a profit.
Coming in second was the re-release Finding Nemo 3D, as the animated classic drew a solid $18 million. The Possession was a distant third with just $5.9 million, with the Shia LaBeouf/Tom Hardy actioner Lawless chiming in at fourth with $4.4 million. The Bradley Cooper movie The Words continued to disappoint with another week of meager box-office returns with a fifth place finish and a $3.2 million haul.
Rounding out the top ten are The Expendables 2 (#6, $3.2 million), The Bourne Legacy (#7, $3 million), The Campaign (#8, $2.4 million), 2016 Obama’s America (#9, $2.2 million), and Last Ounce of Courage (#10, $2.1 million).
