It takes a lot to wake me up from my emotional slumber, but I applaud the Toronto International Film Festival (let’s just call them TIFF) for giving me my daily cup of cinematic Joe with the Official Trailer to Brian De Palma’s new film Passion.
The movie, which is an adaptation of Alain Corneau’s 2010 feature Love Crime, is continuation of Brian De Palma’s obsession with sexual game play, manipulation, and the dangerous confrontation of one’s duality (Sisters, Femme Fatale, Snake Eyes, Dressed To Kill, Body Double, and The Black Dahlia are prime examples). Having Rachel McAdams and Noomi Rapace swim in De Palma’s world for 100 minutes will surely raise eyebrows at TIFF, and like most of the director’s work, expect an impassioned response from the festival goers.
As much as I love De Palma’s strong visual sense when met with studio driven projects (The Untouchables, Carlito’s Way, Casualties of War, and yes, even Bonfire of the Vanities), the filmmaker’s deepest and darkest aesthetic is evinced with material he also writes, and thankfully he penned an original screenplay with Passion. Judging from the trailer, his love for beautiful women and split diopter shots (:21 seconds in baby!!) are still intact. Tell us what you think of the trailer for Passion!!
