Bradley Cooper’s easy like Sunday morning charm is evident from his work on the first two Hangover films, but none of that amiable demeanor exists in his upcoming drama The Words.
Opening September 7th, The Words centers on a talented but struggling writer (Cooper) who decides to plagiarize an author’s (Jeremy Irons) lost manuscript and transform it into his own novel. The plagiarist’s success is threatened after a spirited and eventually heartbreaking encounter with the writer. Co-starring Zoe Saldana as our antihero’s wife, the film features Cooper’s most emotionally rich performance to date, and it will be fascinating to see the depths Cooper traverses when the Silver Linings Playbook later this year (the movie’s directed by The Fighter filmmaker David O’Russell).
Of course there is the prospect of returning to director Todd Phillips‘ skewed, arrested development driven universe, as shooting for The Hangover Part III begins next March. During a recent interview to promote The Words, Mr. Cooper lavished praise for his Hangover collaborators, calling Phillips the best comedic director around (Judd Apatow…are you reading this??). For fans of director Joe Carnahan and The A-Team, sequel prospects are pretty much nil.
