Sitting down this morning to promote SIDE BY SIDE, his upcoming documentary on the art of digital filmmaking and the death of photochemical films as we know them, KEANU REEVES took a few minutes to talk about MAN OF TAI CHI, his big screen directorial debut currently in production in China. Using state-of-the-art digital techniques, MAN OF TAI CHI is also employing crews from all over China. Shooting on foreign soil is daunting even for experienced filmmakers but REEVES appears to be taking it all in stride and credits years of pre-production for keeping him in check.
There’s nothing quite so gratifying and inspiring as watching a man who loves his work talk about it….smile.
…..and only “an idea”?….after five years of development, I suspect the story boards were mapped out in the mind’s eye of the director. Such understatement!
This first directorial effort - amidst the selftutorial of “Side by Side”, and after many years of the craftsman’s perfecting of his craft - should prove both intriguing and interesting, as a result: of that I have no doubt.
Much like Tai Chi itself, “its Man” might well, as Director, prove to be both surprisingly effective and understated, within the confines of a film which uses this concept and discipline as fulcrum and guide.
I shall look forward to its release with great interest…
