From the late 1980s through most of the 1990s, Jean-Claude Van Damme was a high profile action star thanks to his movies Bloodsport, Timecop, and Hard Target (directed by John Woo).

Unfortunately, JCVD’s star took a bit of a hit the past ten years, as most of his films are straight to DVD (if you live stateside).  Van Damme is both self effacing and driven, plus he is open to new challenges (just watch his thinking outside the box feature JCVD), so one wonders why Hollywood hasn’t knocked on his door for years.

But JCVD is back, and in a big way, as the villain in The Expendables 2, which opens in theaters August 17th.  The actor was actually offered a role in The Expendables, and in the following clip he explains why he rejected Sylvester Stallone’s offer:
