Released in New York on this day in 1962, THE APARTMENT continues to be thought of as one of the finest comedy/dramas to ever win the Academy Award for Best Picture. Co-written (with I.A.L. DIAMOND) and directed by BILLY WILDER, this follow-up to SOME LIKE IT HOT proved to be a major critical and commercial success. A tale of ambition and adultery set against the backdrop of mid-century Madison Avenue, the film starred JACK LEMMON, SHIRLEY MacLAINE, FRED MacMURRAY, RAY WALSTON, JACK KRUSCHEN , DAVID WHITE and EDIE ADAMS. During one of our many interviews with JACK LEMMON, he talked about this being one of WILDER’S ‘peak’ films and explained the origin of the term “magic time.” (CLICK ON THE MEDIA BAR FOR AUDIO)
THE APARTMENT is available on DVD and Blu-ray
