Making its way to home video today, the five-part mini-series MILDRED PIERCE is a brilliant retelling of JAMES M. CAINE’S classic 1941 novel MILDRED PIERCE. Originally filmed in 1945 by MICHAEL CURTIZ, that film won a Best Actress Oscar for star JOAN CRAWFORD. This time around, it’s directed by TODD HAYNES (FAR FROM HEAVEN) from a script he co-wrote with JON RAYMOND and features a stellar cast that includes KATE WINSLET, GUY PEARCE, EVAN RACHEL WOOD, JAMES LeGROSS and MELISSA LEO. Telling the story of a Depression Era single mother’s slavish devotion to her insatiable (and ultimately sociopathic) daughter, this lush drama seems as relevant today as it was when written. During a press conference for the film’s original broadcast, WINSLET talked about her approach to this iconic role. (CLICK ON THE MEDIA BAR FOR AUDIO)
