In director Jason Reitman’s new film Young Adult, Charlize Theron is Mavis Gary a bitter teen lit author who returns to her hometown to rekindle her romance with high school boyfriend Buddy Slade (Patrick Wilson). Although Buddy is married (to Twilight star Elizabeth Reaser), Mavis still intends to rock the boat.
During a recent press conference, Charlize Theron was asked if she could sympathize with such an unlikable character. “I don’t really like sympathy,” said Theron. “I don’t like it for myself. Sometimes sympathy can feel like you’re trying to kind of victimize someone. I don’t know maybe it’s my own s**t I have to deal with, but I think more than anything people want to be understood.”
