When you’re on a hamster wheel and part of the rat race, sometimes, as Bono sings, you’re just “running to stand still.” For over 20 years, Dane Cook has delivered his anecdotal and off the cuff humor at bars, Chinese food restaurants, clubs and, most notably, Madison Square Garden.
In a recent interview, he admits that his dramatic turns in Mr. Brooks and Dan In Real Life were his creative high points as an actor, so it makes perfect sense that his latest film, Answers to Nothing, shows us a darker (and deeper) dimension to Mr. Cook.
“It’s interesting because comedians, they’re cut from a very rare kind of cloth where the goal of most comedians is to break through every boundary and taboo and hurdle and get right to the heart of something,” says Cook, who plays a conflicted adulterer in the film (Elizabeth Mitchell co-stars as his spouse). “And yet many of them have those very same boundaries and hurdles to get to receive it. I realized that early on in my life and my career. I thought that I’d like to live beyond that and take more risks. I think that was a defining moment in my stand-up for me - was I could be a character or I could be as off the cuff or in the moment as possible. And then it’s just about being vulnerable and being real.”

Dane Cook also talks about the “breakthrough” theme behind Answers To Nothing:
Answers to Nothing, a Los Angeles set ensemble drama which also stars Nico Vega singer Aja Volkman, is now playing in select theaters (it’s also available on Video on Demand).
