
Anna Kendrick, plays Katherine, a therapist who gives advice to Adam (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), a twentysomething cancer patient in the Seth Rogen produced dramedy, 50/50.
“I sort of felt similar about Up in the Air,” says Kendrick, who didn’t conduct extensive interviews with cancer patients to prepare for 50/50. “I didn’t really want to talk to people who had been fired. There is only so far that I could take research before feeling like this is…I’m just making a movie, and I don’t want to just use somebody’s experience. At the time, I was lucky enough to not have a close friend who had dealt with cancer before. I didn’t have anybody to call on and I didn’t just ask somebody. I would have felt weird about that.”
Kendrick, who received a Supporting Actress nod for her work in Up in the Air, explains why her work on 50/50 was a “cathartic” experience:
