Machine Gun Preacher is the true story of Sam Childers (Gerard Butler), a former drug dealer who transforms his life and creates the Angels of East Africa rescue organization.
The actor said he went to a “dark, emotional” place to portray Childers. “Sam’s journey was this dark journey into hell in trying to help these kids,” says Butler. “And kind of this descent into madness. He’s just ground down by what he witnessed, and by the constant pressure of family, of finance, of war, abuse, death, and of hopelessness really.”
