James Franco, who received an Oscar nod for his work in 127 Hours, takes on an entirely different challenge with Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Although he wasn’t a huge proponent of acting with visual effects 10 years ago during his Spider-Man days, Mr. Franco has taken a different attitude and is actually quite passionate about the form, especially with his latest film.
“I get to make a movie with opposite a chimpanzee but underneath there is an incredible actor and I can look him eye to eye and engage with him and do everything that I would do with a non-performance capture actor,” says Franco. “So it’s exciting.”

Co-starring Freida Pinto and Andy Serkis (as Caesar), Rise of the Planet of the Apes opens Friday.
