James Franco stars in Rise of the Planet of the Apes as Will Rodman (James Franco), a scientist working on a cure for Alzheimer’s Disease (his dad, played by John Lithgow, is struggling with the disease). Through his genetic research, which uses simians as test subjects, the apes, led by Caesar (Andy Serkis), is formed.
“Once I saw (the filmmakers) take on it, compared to the other movies, it was a very grounded take on it,” says Franco. “And then when I met Rupert (director Rupert Wyatt) he told me that the apes would be captured with this performance capture technology and that WETA (visual effects company) would be doing it. It was a lot of the crew from Lord of the Rings. I just thought, yeah, this would be the way to do it. I really honestly didn’t think about being upstaged by apes. I just thought it would be an interesting movie and a great thing to be a part of.”
