THE HELPThe Help, opening August 10th, is based on the Kathryn Stockett bestseller about a college grad (Emma Stone) who, with the help of two African-American maids (Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer), pens a book detailing the racism that was inherent in Jackson, Mississippi during the early 1960s.

“It’s very difficult, because (it’s the) 21st century,” said Davis, who talked about the challenge of playing Aibileen Clark.  “I’m freer, and I’m defined in a different way.  It was a lot of negotiation on my part too because I felt, do I want to play a character that could be viewed as so subservient?  But I see her as more than that.”  (Click on the media bar below to hear Viola Davis talk about her role, which is already receiving Oscar buzz.)
