First time filmmaker Cindy Meehl’s documentary Buck centers horseman Buck Brannaman, an insightful and charismatic cowboy who overcame an abusive childhood to become a loving family man and dedicated horseman.  Serving as a technical advisor on on The Horse Whisperer (Robert Redford is also interviewed in the doc), Brannaman is no stranger to the movie process, and his ease with the camera (and more importantly, natural rapport with people and horses) is readily evident.

With the success of Buck, Brannaman’s story may hit the studio system.  “I wrote this book The Faraway Horses a few years ago that tells the story of my life really in depth and we’re actually fairly close to making a deal on making a feature film on my book,” said Brannaman, who is a guest on Thursday’s installment of Late Show with David Letterman.  “But Cindy’s documentary has sort of brought up the interest in the feature.  And it’s really not so much going to be a horse film.  Of course, there will be some of that because the horse really has been a salvation for me and a rescue for me - so there has to be a part of that (in the film). But we really want to tell the story in depth about me and my brother as kids, and going through some of the very dark things that we went through in order to encourage people that it’s not always a bad ending.  You might sort of have a bad beginning, but that’s not how it has to turn out.”

Buck, which received the U.S. Documentary Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival, is now playing in limited release.
