A BETTER LIFE

The streets of Los Angeles dig deeper than picture postcard palm trees or a Hollywood
Walk of Fame star.  Amidst the smoggy haze and persistent sunshine exists a city filled with immigrants struggling to fulfill their American Dream. Filmmaker Chris Weitz, who previously directed The Twilight Saga: New Moon, puts their lives front and center with the inspired, and at times heartbreaking, A Better Life.

We follow the life of Mexican gardener Carlos Galindo (Demian Bichir), an illegal immigrant who scours the city for his stolen truck.  Without his vehicle, Carlos‘ dreams of a “better life” for his son Luis (Jose Julian) remains elusive.

During the picture’s final moments, Carlos and Luis have an emotional exchange that is one of this year’s standout acting sequences, and it’s a scene which should land Bichir his share of awards buzz (both he and Julian deliver first rate performances in A Better Life).  Weitz is pulling for a bit of awards recognition for Bichir.

“Look, I want to get him nominated, because I think he deserves it,” said the filmmaker, who also directed About A Boy and The Golden Compass. “That’s my big thing, other than wanting people to see the movie, I think he deserves it.  That’s one of those great scenes that can sometimes really draw attention to the talents of a particular actor.”

A Better Life opens in limited release Friday.
