Director J.J. Abrams’ homage to Steven Spielberg films, Super 8, was the #1 film over the weekend, as it took in $37 million.  With an estimated $50 million budget, the picture should turn a healthy profit for Paramount, especially since the feature is receiving excellent word of mouth.  X-Men: First Class was #2 with $25 million.  Here’s the top 10:

1.  Super 8 - $37 million.

2.  X-Men: First Class - In just two weeks of release, the picture has made over $98 million domestically.  Over the weekend, the picture made $25 million.

3.  The Hangover: Part II - $18.5 million.

4.  Kung Fu Panda 2 - $16.6 million.

5. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides - $10.9 million over the weekend, and the picture had collected over $208 million domestically.

6.  Bridesmaids - $10.2 million.

7.  Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer - It was a “bummer” that Heather Graham was nowhere to be found in The Hangover Part II, but at least she landed a lead role in this family summer film. $6.3 million.

8.  Midnight in Paris - After the paltry domestic box-office returns of Whatever Works and You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger, Woody Allen rebounds with his strongest outing in years. $6.1 million.  Stateside, the picture has made over $14 million.

9.  Thor - $2.4 million.

10.  Fast Five - $1.7 million.
