James McAvoy (Atonement) stars as Charles Xavier (Professor X) in director Matthew Vaughn’s X-Men: First Class, a picture which delves into the origins of the close friendship between Xavier and Magneto (Michael Fassbender). The pair start off their partnership teaming up to take down Sebastian Shaw (Kevin Bacon), a mutant with a rather destructive superiority complex (he starts the Cuban Missile Crisis!).
McAvoy discusses the James Bond influence in the film (the first part of the picture has Magneto traveling around the world to find and kill Shaw).
Born into a life of privilege, Xavier is a telepath who devotes his life to aiding humanity, even though humans are the mutants’ greatest enemy (at least, in Magneto’s eyes). “He’s a scientist, and he’s spent his entire life studying mutation theory and now he gets to study it practically,” said McAvoy. “And the actual physical presence of it. I also think he’s been alone for his entire life. He didn’t have an extensive family and I think he’s felt very much alone. His power has been able to connect to other people…so he sort of builds a family for himself.”
McAvoy talks about the complex decisions all of the mutants face in X-Men: First Class.
X-Men: First Class opens Friday.
