French-Spanish actress Astrid Berges-Frisbey plays Syrena, a mermaid who forms a bond with a missionary named Philip (Sam Claflin) in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.  Berges-Frisbey promoted the film last week at the Cannes Film Festival, and on Saturday she was the recipient of the Chopard Trophy, an honor which spotlights emerging talent.

Berges-Frisbey recalls the initial stages of her Pirates experience “When I went to the first audition, I did not speak English so it was quite really unreal,” said Berges-Frisbey, who received her award from Cannes jury head Robert De Niro.  “I learned so much and I felt so lucky and it was an extraordinary experience.  The mermaids in the movie are different from the mermaids we have seen before and the mermaid I play is different from the others because she meets Philip. I think their relationship symbolizes something really great and powerful.  Like kind of two cultures meet and try to trust the other one and try to take off all the protection.  It was just a pleasure.”
