Terrence Malick, one of the more revered directors working in cinema, returns with The Tree of Life, a picture which centers on a Midwestern family in the 1950s. Brad Pitt is Mr. O’Brien the complicated patriarch in the picture, a military vet who has a commanding presence over his three sons. Sean Penn also stars as Jack, an architect who is still haunted by his father’s influence.
Mr. Malick is often viewed as a recluse, since he refuses to promote his films to the media. That task is left up to his actors and crew, and during the Cannes Film Festival, Pitt talked about Malick’s personality. “He’s quite jovial, he’s incredibly sweet,” said Pitt. “He’s laughing most of the day…when the dog would act up and bite one of us or something. He finds pleasure in the day is my point. I think this is the difference between great directors and good directors: he truly loves all his characters in a very passionate way. (He) respects them and appreciates them. Again, there in lies the difference.”
