Sir Anthony Hopkins is Odin, the father of the God of Thunder (Chris Hemsworth) and the manipulative Loki (Tom Hiddleston) in the new film Thor. Directed by Kenneth Branagh, the picture opens nationwide Friday.

During last weekend’s press conference, Hopkins was asked if his Thor costume helped him prepare for Odin.  “You don’t have to do too much, except speak up I guess” said Hopkins.  “But you don’t have to act.  It’s like John Wayne said, ‘When you are in the desert, you don’t have to act, you let the desert do the talking.’  I think those movie actors at that time, they knew what they were doing. They just got on their horses and they did it.  They were wonderful.  So I take a page out of their coffee book and try not to do too much, but Ken challenges you all the time, in a very nice, gentlemanly, and charming way.”

During preparations for Thor, Branagh and Hopkins talked about such films as Shane and Lawman, and the themes from those flicks actually apply to the world of Asgard.  Click on the media bar and listen to Hopkins talk about the Western influences that are prevalent in Thor’s narrative.

Natalie Portman also stars in Thor as Jane Foster, a scientist who falls in love with a god who wields a very big hammer (aka Mjolnir).
