sniperreloaded

Sniper lead Tom Berenger is nowhere to be found in the latest installment Sniper: Reloaded, but Berenger’s co-star Billy Zane, sporting a pretty sick mustache, returns as Richard Miller in the new direct to DVD/Blu-ray feature.

Relative newcomer Chad Michael Collins is Marine Sgt. Brandon Beckett, a soldier who believes facing his enemy is the proper mode of combat.  Brandon’s dad, Thomas Beckett (Berenger) was a dead-on sniper, but killing enemies while hiding in plain sight like dear old dad is not in his cards.  Brandon has a change of heart when he and his men are ambushed by a sniper during a blown mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. With his men killed before his eyes, Brandon has only one mission: take out the assassin.  Richard Sammel, one of the German officers killed at the hands of the Inglourious Basterds, plays Beckett’s commanding officer in Sniper: Reloaded.

Billy Zane pops during the second act to teach Brandon the ways of the sniper, and the two team up to eliminate the bad guys.  At 91 minutes, the picture, shot in South Africa, moves at a brisk enough pace, and there is enough sniping action to keep fans of the series entertained.  I’ve been a sucker for Billy Zane films ever since his creepy performance in Dead Calm, so Sniper: Reloaded was my cup of tea.  Chad Michael Collins was a capable enough lead, and the film’s final moments leaves room for another Sniper picture.  My only complaint is the lack of special features on the disc.  A commentary or behind-the-scenes featurette on shooting in South Africa should have been part of the package, but thankfully the picture still stands on its own as a solid B-level action flick.
