During the press conference for Thor this weekend, director Kenneth Branagh and Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige were asked about the prospects of a Thor sequel. Although the picture is receiving excellent word of mouth, the pair gave measured answers just in case the movie does tank.
“We’ve got 600 plus issues, we’ve got a thousand years of mythology, we’ve got other stories we would like to tell,” said Feige about the movie, which opens nationwide Friday. “The audience will tell us whether they want to see those other stories, but we have to be prepared for that, if we should get the call. So Don Payne (one of the writers on Thor) is working on story ideas for a part two. We’ve got various options with Ken to discuss (about) coming back. Right now, the focus is on the first one, but Don is slowly but surely thinking about where to take the character next, should we be so lucky.”
Mr. Branagh, whose directing career should skyrocket with Thor’s inevitable success, is not waving a victory flag. “Kevin and I share, from my point of view, sort of a deep Irish, Celtic superstition of taking anything for granted,” added Branagh, whose past directing credits include Dead Again, Hamlet, and a remake of Sleuth. “And the Marvel world is a world of non-assumption. When I first started in the film business, but please forgive for the language I’m about to use, a producer said to me, ‘young man assumption is the mother of all f**k ups.’ So we are assuming nothing, we are offering the film up to the world and we shall listen. (That) is what will happen.”
