Now playing in limited release, The Bang Bang Club is the true story of combat photographers Greg Marinovich (Ryan Phillippe), Kevin Carter (Taylor Kitsch), Joao Silva (Neels Van Jaarsveld) and Ken Oosterbroek (Frank Rautenbach) who were determined to capture images of post Apartheid South Africa during the early 1990s. The film is based on the book The Bang-Bang Club: Snapshots from a Hidden War, which was penned by Marinovich and Silva.

“It’s extraordinary.  These people put their lives at risk to get these shots.  To me, they are heroes,” said co-star Malin Akerman, who plays newspaper photo editor Robin Comley in the film.  “Because without those pictures we wouldn’t be able to see what was really going on.  It’s so important to see those images so we get a reality check because we can talk about things and again the emotions just aren’t connected until you see an image or unless you are there.  I also think, and this is just my personal opinion, having met Joao and Greg, this is what they live for.  They can’t do anything else.  Joao just lost his legs in Afghanistan and I bet you by next year he will be back out there.”

Click on the media bar and listen to Akerman share her experiences in South Africa.  “It affects you so deeply and profoundly,” added the actress.  “A piece of my heart will always be in Africa.”
