Director Gus Van Sant’s long delayed film Restless will open the Cannes Film Festival’s Un Certain Regard Selection on May 12th.  The coming of age film centers on the relationship between a funeral crasher (Henry Hopper, son of late actor Dennis Hopper) and a fellow outsider (Mia Wasikowska).  Van Sant is no stranger to Cannes, as he received the coveted Palme d’Or in 2003 for Elephant.

“I had been a fan of Gus’ work,” said Wasikowska, who talked about Restless while promoting Jane Eyre. “My mom showed me his films when I was a teenager and it really changed my perspective on filmmaking and the possibilities you have with the medium, because he always seems to stretch them.  It’s really rare when you come across a teenage character who resembles something of what it’s like to be a young person.  And I think Gus handles adolescence with such sensitivity.  He gives us a lot of credit for our emotional capability and our ability to handle complex ideas and feelings and situations.  That’s what I think this movie will be like.  I think (Restless) will be a beautiful film.”
