Dana Delany tapped right into the role of Megan Hunt for her new series, Body of Proof, but not necessarily because of the similarities to the character.

Delany explains that Megan is a strong neurosurgeon who loses her ability to operate after an accident – and just before shooting the pilot episode, the actress was also in a car collision.

“I had a car accident where I was hit by a bus,” Delany recalls. “My car was totaled and I broke two fingers and I got a concussion. As I see the bus t-boning my car I thought, ‘You gotta be kidding me.’ ”

Healing from her injuries wasn’t the only adjustment Delany had to make. The series is shot in Rhode Island, which wouldn’t necessarily be her first choice, but it has already started to feel like home.

“It’s an adjustment at my age to be moving to a new town,” she begins, “I was hoping for L.A. or New York, but you know what? Providence has been really welcoming to us. They gave us a tax break, which New York was not able to do because their budget is still in flux. It really doubles well for Philadelphia and there are locations that nobody has ever seen before so it will have a look that you’re not used to seeing on television. A lot of pizza in Providence – and the people have been nice.”

Body of Proof airs Tuesdays, 10:00 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
