As So you Think You Can Dance heads into Las Vegas week, choreographers Napoleon and Tabitha D’Umo are eager to get started weeding down the competition to the best of the best.

“The people aren’t quite selected yet,” Napoleon begins. “But, the people that have been out on the road that we’ve picked up have been phenomenal. It’s going to be quite a season.”

Each year the show takes the dancers a step up from the previous season – and Tabitha says the boost is a natural progression…aided by their ability as choreographers to design each number distinctively.

“I think in the presentation of what you do week to week really helps make it feel different,” she says. “And we try to find out what their strengths are and find a unique way to package it. Their personalities really play a part in it, the music selections play a part in it and that’s what keeps inspiring us to do something different week after week.”

Of course there are always going to be those dancer wannabes who can’t seem to grasp that they stink on their feet

“They think their fantastic and God bless them, they try so hard,” Tabitha points out. “But, as the show has gone on every year, the caliber of dancing improves every year, so you can’t squeak by.”

“I think there are a lot of people in the world that think they can dance amazingly, just like you sing in your car,” Napoleon explains. “Sometimes I believe, ‘Oh, I’m pretty good,’ and I think some people think, ‘I’m really good’ and go a little too far. If they love dancing, I don’t knock them.”

How far it too far? Well, we’ve already seen contestants actually brain themselves by slamming into the floor or even throwing up on stage from the strain of it all in previous seasons. And Sex, that gawky contestant who manages to audition each year may or may not be making his way back again.

“I can’t say,” Tabitha teases.

“He could show up anyway, Napoleon laughs.” We only see the contestants in the cities we do - so we don’t actually get to see everyone.”

We’ll take that as a yes.

So You Think You Can Dance begins its eighth season in May of this year.
