Sucker Punch

In what could be a star making performance, Emily Browning plays a spirited young woman named Babydoll in director Zack Snyder’s (Watchmen) latest cinematic dreamscape, Sucker Punch. Caught between a world of harsh reality and fantasy, Babydoll is determined to break free from her current constrictions.

With films like Sucker Punch and the upcoming Hanna (Saoirse Ronan plays a teenager who was raised as a killing machine), female driven action projects could be here to stay.  However, Browning has her own take on the matter. “Putting it into categories of gender is a little outdated maybe, ” said Browning.  “Maybe this can start the idea of it being normal for girls to do an action film.  I’m of the opinion that females can be just as strong and interesting in these roles as males.”

During the interview, one reporter described Sucker Punch as “sexist,” referencing a brothel sequence in the story.  Click on the media bar and listen to Browning explain why she and her co-stars were not objectified in the film.
