The thriller, The Roommate, was the #1 movie at the box office Friday taking in $6,400,000. The Roommate is about a college freshman (Minka Kelly) who moves into a dorm and shares her room with a girl she has never met (Leighton Meester). They start off as friends, but that quickly changes when Meester’s character begins to stalk Kelly’s character.
The Sanctum, the 3D movie produced by James Cameron, seems to be the bomb of the weekend so far, coming in at #2. The film took in a measly $3,553,000, yet it cost $30 million to produce. These numbers will only add to the woes of Universal Pictures, which over the past three years, has had several high profile flops, including Green Zone, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, and many more. Many in Hollywood are pointing to the poor jobs done by Universal’s marketing and publicity departments as the source of the problems with these films.
Rounding out the top five movies at Friday’s box office are: At #3, No Strings Attached earning $2,924,000; the Academy Award nominated film,The Kings’s Speech, pulled in $2,330,000 at #4; and at #5 was last weeks top movie at the box office, The Rite, earning $1,935,000.
