Peter Weir's Crew set up a shot for 'The Way Back' (Wrekin Hill Entertainment/Newmarket Films)
Much of Peter Weir’s work centers on man’s relationship (and conflict) with nature, and this tenuous bond has rendered some of the more awe-inspiring cinematic sequences within the past thirty years (Witness, The Last Wave, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, Fearless). “I love it when you as an audience are really a part of the film rather than the didactic approach where you are told everything and every question is answered,” said Weir when asked about the compelling yet elusive nature of his body of work. “I like mysteries and I love it where the screen is giving off a sense of mystery apart from many other things.” His latest film, The Way Back, centers on several escapees from a Siberian gulag who travel through thousands of miles of harsh terrain in search of freedom.
