In The Rite, Oscar winning actor Sir Anthony Hopkins stars as Father Lucas, a priest who performs exorcisms, and the feature contains yet another intense performance from the 73-year-old thespian. “Be kind because everyone is fighting a great battle,” said Hopkins, who discussed his view of demons and devils. “Every single human being is fighting a great battle. We never know what peoples’ problems. are. So to hedge the bet is to be kind to everyone. Be generous. Because it is so easy to be ungenerous and vindictive. And we all have it. Resentments. Anger. Revenge. But finally you burn your own house down. If the devil is in that equation, and (you say) ‘I’m going to get them because of something that they’ve done to me 30 years ago’ - that is a non-anthropomorphic devil. It’s a demon, which will destroy you. And we all have it, none of us are saints. But (the point is) to guard against it.” Hopkins, considered one of today’s top shelf actors, was pensive yet amiable while promoting The Rite last week in Los Angeles, and he gave a rather interesting insight on why uncertainty is not such a bad state.
